Priming the oil on a 53 Super C

OK boys (and girls) the pressure plate came in yesterday and things are starting to go together nicely! (For those that might not remember I am working on a complete rebuild of this fantastic Super C). Looking ahead a little bit I want to make sure that I have some oil run through the block, rocker arms, etc. before I start it up. I used NAPA engine pre lube while re assembling, but I want to go that extra mile. With that said does anyone have a good method of priming the oil system on the C123 engine? Thanks in advance for everyone’s help.

Josh

Hi Josh, Did you prime that oil pump before installing it on the engine? We used a pressure vessel to force oil through out the engine. We put a pipe tee in the oil gallery along with the gauge. Good Luck, Hal

Josh - Here's what works for me:

Once the engine is all together and the sump is filled with oil, remove the spark plugs. Shoot a squirt or two of engine oil into each plug opening (probably not necessary since I use pre-lube, but I do it anyway) then crank the engine with the starter until the oil gage comes off the pin. You are now assured the lube system is fully charged with oil. (Note: It'll take a minute or two of cranking for the gage move)

Now stick the plugs back, check the oil level and fire her up!

Another trick I use on a fresh motor is to dump the last new quart of oil down in the oil filter opening, then assemble the filter housing and fire 'er up. The oil you put in through the valve cover will lube the top end for you. After installing the rings, I soak the piston and ring assy with engine oil before installing with a ring compressor so they are always ready to go.

Josh, Just by hand cranking the motor with your plugs out will prime your pump. You used the prelube and if you wanted you could dump a little oil over the rockerarms shaft assembly to get some lube in the top end of the motor. Also a few squirts of oil in each spark plug hole would help. By pre-priming the pump you should get oil pressure pretty quick.
