I'm probably going to get snapped at for this but personally I prefer the 66 series but only because my experience has been with a 1586 vs a 1466 and only because I worked for a corporate farm that had a 1466 to pull a 12row planter and when they switched to a 16row JD planter they decided to get a bigger tractor to pull it with they got a 1586 with no research involved, power was no problem but when you went to back up especially in Ohio with a lot of point rows the reverse was at warp speed both low and high range, I looked down at the radar gun once and it said 6mph you kind of aimed it. I know the 15 had a different gearing than the bull gear tractors. The good think is the cab was wonderful. I think the 15 had a 6speed trans vs an 8 so I believe the smaller tractors had a better working range.

I have put 7000 hrs on a 1066 and bought a 986 a year ago and I would never go back to a 66 again, the cab is loud dusty and hot, the a/c is just good enough to let you sweat if its over 90 and the brakes never worked good on mine. The 986 on the other hand has been great, the left hand shift is not a problem unless you have a rider with you, mine has a loader and it makes it great to shift and lift, ths a/c works good even after being converted to 134a and ths brakes and steering are great. the only problem i have with mine is that its needing a injector pump now which seems to be normal now with low sulfer diesel. just my 2 cents worth Terry

I am no expert on mechanical issues, but as far as shifting, I prefer the 66 series hands down. I hate the left hand shifting, and my 1466 shifts about twice as easily (especially in reverse) compared to my 886. Just my two cents.

I started out running a 1486 as my first "big" tractor - I was about nine. It was a lot easier to lean back and brace yourself against the seat while standing on the brakes and clutch and reach down and shift then it was to try and reach forward to shift. After running one of those for a couple years I never did like the shifter placement on the 66 and older series. I guess its what you get used to.

The 966 will be easier to maintain, and will be less problematic with respect to operator controls.

Any of the 86 series I've ever driven have been difficult to shift, and I've heard horror stories about the cable-actuated clutch mechanism. Plus, having the gear shift on the LEFT side of the cab is inconvenient if you're running typical offset-to-the-right implements.

John,

You and I should start our own private "Buyers Club" 'cause I'm frantically searcing for one too. :>)

Good point: Everything

Bad points: None

They are just one heck of a rig for a small to mid sized operation. A guy has to find a good one tho, 'cause they always tend to have had the wheels run off 'em.

The 86 series has a much better cab layout and the shifter placement makes it much more handy.

As stated, a lot of these have had the wheels run off of them.
