You know, there is a reason for everything. I thought I had fixed the problem in my distributor by replacing a sheared distributor gear pin but I never even considered why it sheared in the first place. I had it all together after replacing the pin,it was sitting there idleing and all of a sudden the whole distributor started turning like a PTO shaft, ripping all my sparkplug wires and coil wire off in a tangled mess,(Go ahead laugh now it was kind of a comical sight). I removed the distributor and found it locked up tight. I took the distributor apart and found that a screw had worked loose from the plate that covers the advance weights and knocked one of the springs off and the spring was wedged between the wall of the distributor and one of the advance weights, locking it up. My guess is the screw had been out for a while causing the original pin to shear. This taught me a lesson in cause and effect.

Dont feel bad, I rebuilt an M with 4 inch IH fire crater pistons and she blew up after 30 minutes. One of the new sleeves that I used was bad.

I had a similar occurance on my SMTA when I had it off for engine rebuild. I put innew points and condensor and interchanged the screws when I put it together, tractor wouldn't start and had no spark, the advance plate was bent to heck and it sheared the drive pin. At least I was able to determine the problem the first time through. I guess if my distributor had coiled up all my wires around it maybe I would have found the problem sooner anyway. You really should have aken a picture.

You are really confusing me. I have to assume that the screw, which is a bolt from the governor cover, was left inside of the governor and then it along with the spring made its way over to the gear causing that to jam. This then allowed the ditributor to turn after shearing the 2-3/8 inch bolts that hold the whole asembly?

No, the spring was wedged between one of the weights and the side of the distributor causing it to lock up. The screw came out of the cover, the other side of the cover was broken and the screw was in the hole holding down nothing ,so I had a loose cover.Luckily I have Austin farm salvage down the road and got the parts to fix it. I HOPE!!!! MAY THE FARMALL GODS BLESS ME!!!

Okay Red,

Here's what ya do:

Every night before you go to sleep, instead of counting sheep, start saying to yourself: "Gotta buy a diesel, Gotta buy a diesel, Gotta buy a diesel."

And walla! Soon all your problems will resolve themselves! :>)

I'm sorry. I was laughing, I can just see the distributor spinning like a run away washing machine.

Look on the bright side. You have a great story to tell.

Lucky I was adjusting the timing at the time and did not have the bolts tightnd down real tight or I would have sheared a lot of things. GULP!!!
