steering box problem IH 354

The thrust bearings in my steering gear have lost the rollers and I want to replace them. I have the box off the tractor but can't get the steering arm off the shaft. I've cut a "U" shape in a piece of 3" x 1/4" angle, placed it under the arm and around the shaft and beat the dickens out of it but it won't budge. Who here has done that and has a solution? I'm soaking it in gasoline/transmission oil mix now. If that doesn't work I'm guessing heat is the next thing to try. Do I heat the arm or the shaft? Any sugestions welcome. Thanks, Gene

I rebuilt one of those a few years back. It is splined, not keyed. Seems like I used a puller. Heat the arm not the shaft. Don't beat the arm off as you risk cracking the housing.
It's not a real heavy duty housing. You'll be a while finding one and if you find one you'll pay big $$$ for it.

I have the box just dangling, hanging by the yoke under the arm and I'm hitting on the end of the shaft with a brass buffer. I have the box tied off so it won't fall to the floor. No danger of that now, though. I've tried a heavy home made puller, but probably not as good as a professional one. I'm going to soak it all night and heat it tomorrow. If I don't get it off then I guess I'll take it to a tractor shop before I break something. Thanks for the reply. Gene

If you are dead bent on beating on it remove the
side plate on the housing opposite the steering arm. This will allow the shaft to exit the case
and may help you remove the arm.

Well, the one I re-built had a crack from having loaded up with water and freezing up. I never could find a used one. IH guy found one at a salvage yard for $300. Needless to say I welded it up best I could.
