strange super c block?

I just bought a basket case super c and found something on the block I have never seen before. There is the word SPECIAL cast right into the block on the distributor side, low and toward the rear. Does anyone know anything about this casting? Have never heard anything about this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tony Barber

The Serial # of my tractor is 107416, the block is 354898 R1, and the casting # 6-7-W. Sid.

Thanks for the posts. Those do look like reasonable numbers for still being original pieces. Your block was cast June 7 '51 and we now know that 7000 units into Super C production the engine numbers were only separated from the tractor by about 300. For comparison, I once had a '51 straight C that had an engine serial number about 2000 off from the chassis number.

I think the word special being cast into the block is due to the fact that IH did produce approx 500 Cs with the 123 block. These tractors were serial number 48000 - 48499. If I remember correctly I have seen a service bulleting that stated that certain piston & sleeve sets were only to be used in these tractors with "Special" cast into the block. I would assume that any overrun blocks or beginning production blocks would probably still have special cast into them until it was removed due to this block only being used in the production of the Super C & like tractors..

My Super C, Engine No. FCM 107696 G, has "Special" cast in two places, behind the distributor and down by the oil filter base. Am interested to hear further comments. Sid.

I went back and checked the post Joe was talking about, Terry2567 posted his casting number which was correct for an original block 354898R1 and the tractor's serial num of 112416, but never posted the block's serial number. We have no tractor serial num, but a block serial number here which sounds reasonable for another early production tractor; which make both of these relatively early in the Super C build. Like I posted last time, the word special was not on the later R1 blocks (I have one here from a '52 tractor). aitch if you would, please post the block's casting number and the tractor's serial num also. If this is related to casting of early production blocks, we should also see some 'special' Super A blocks after serial number 310,000.

Stan: No word special on my Super A serial number 336977 or engine serial number 338597, block part number 354898 R1. I expect you were looking for something closer to serial 310,000.

yeah that's almost 27000 units into production, but one of the tractors above is around 12000 into production and even that seems a little late for a first run 'special' casting? But maybe not... Justin's response above makes alot of sense; the parts books don't reference it (the term 'special'), but if he has service bulletins that do, that would be believable.

Deja vu all over again squared. Boy, this is weird!

Just yesterday I was talking face to face with the chap that posed the same question here about two months ago, and asked him if he ever got an answer about this.

The feedback from YT that he got suggested that the special designation was used when engines "borrowed" from the IH parts division--engines that were used for implements or possibly stationary power units--were installed in the Super C.

Yesterday the fellow told me that another answer he got indicated the "special" came from a modification to the engine while it was on the assembly line perhaps coming from a bulletin handed down from the design department with changes not yet appearing on the engine's drawings and official spec sheets.

Tony,
It seems like someone else on here was asking about seeing the same thing on their C or Super C engine block a while back, we never did come up with anything unique about it so far. Post the blocks serial number (stamped above distributor) and the casting number behind the oil filter and we can run it through the parts books just to check.
