Does anyone know of a web site or a book that can guide me through the proper techniques to prep and paint thes old machines. I would like to do this right the first time and make sure the paint sticks.

If your still pondering painting of your tractor I have a bit of advise, I am a paint rep for DuPont and the best finish you can have is only available from a professional. Paints vary so much and the amount of different products are mind boggleing, remenber this is a crucial part of the restoration and done improperly the coating WILL FAIL prematurly and you are left to do it again. So pay the extra money and have a professional refinish your tractor. I will say however when you look for a place to refinish it look to a restoration shop not your local body shop they are only interested in collision work and if they did take your tractor in as busy work it would not get proper attention it needs, also be sure and get an Epoxy undercoat and a Urethane topcoat.

Alberta:
Can't help you in the book area too much, but be very sure when you are ready to paint that you use a good quality primer not the cheap trash on the corner store shelf. I say this because my dad spent a few thousand (Canadian) dollars painting his 1950 Farmall C only to have the primer bubble up all over a year later. Anyhow, good luck with the restoration!

Well I guess i'll give ya my 2cents. I've painted quite a few old tractors and cars for that matter. I'll keep it simple if you need it more detailed email me and i'll help you further.
I sandblast everything but the hood,grill,gas tank. Sand the hood,grill,gas tank with a good da and 80grit. When everythings bare metal do your staightning,filling dents all that. Prime it with any auto primer you choose. Cost wise and the fact i've never had a problem with it, I use good ole laquer primer. Prime every inch of the tractor. I put 5 good coats on. Go back in the morning and block sand the hood,grill,tank. Put two more coats of primer on it. Word of advice, don't get rushed and sand before its completely dry, it takes alot of work to fix it if you do. When thats dry wet sand it with 360 or 400 grit wet or dry paper. When your done your ready for paint. Make sure to wipe it down good with prep sol or a wax and grease remover before every prime or you'll end up like Jeff, ha ha.
