Like you guys said if the PTO worked right seconds ago and quit working entirely there was a good chance it would be the pin linking the valve assembly together. After taking the nut loose on top the upper valve came right out. Then after taking the lower cap off the rest of the valve fell out by gravity. Now I need help on getting it back together. Seems to me that the top square piece that pins to the linkage is going to have to come off. The upper and lower valve will have to be pinned back together and fit in from the bottom. Then the washer like umbrella and spring will have to be dropped in from the top. Then I would assume I would reattach that extenal square piece that hooks to the linkage. Questions: 1) How is that external linkage piece attaced? (roll pin?????) I assume this reattaches after the valve assembly is push in from the bottom??? 2) What is your recommendation on how to connect the upper and lower pieces of the valve? I assume Case/IH might sell a pin? Someone said to use throttle cable wire. The stiff stuff like on a lawnmower or tiller. Thanks guys.

We had our 986 pto just stop one day and we had the dealer come down and look at it and he went and put new clutches in it while he put that pin in u were talking about. We went and used it the next day and it quit again. the pin that was made to go in there fell out. We just got a small nail and burred the ends up so it woulndn"t fall out again and its been going ever since. that was 2 years ago. Instead of going and buying that part.

Andy I would get the right pin from the dealer it is very hadr and must drive in tight or you will redo this all over again, and all that you got out the PTO needs to go in from the bottom, then screw the squair nut on from the top, but you need to reset the pressure the more you screw the nut on the more pressure you get.
