Hello All,

I am thinking of buying a Farmall M. 48 / 49 model. Rebuilt engine by P.O. Good paint. Tires fair. Starts right up & runs just fine - no smoke.

Is there anything in particular that I should look for on this model? Anything that is a problem area?

Thanks in advance,
\s\ Robert

Those Ms really didn't have a "problem" area as such, but keep in mind that the tractor you are looking at is 55 years old. It could possibly have some problems that just didn't occur when this tractor was 20 years old, so check it over very carefully. Drive it, run it through all of the gears and listen for unusual noises. Run the PTO, run the belt pulley, and do as LarryM suggested.

I have bought 7 farmall M and Super M tractors in the past 18 months. First look for antifreeze in the oil pan. Secondly do a compression test and make sure the spark plugs look good while doing it. If the engine is good and thetransmission does not make noise then everything else is minor. Check the radiator for signs of leaking. If it has a pressurized radiator but the cap has been modified so the cooling system cannot pressurize. Put a different cap on it and warm it up and see if it leaks.
