My 424 starts popping and cutting out after it gets thoroughly warmed up,like maybe after an hour of brush hoggin or so..Heres whats been done to it,has a Pertronix electronic ignition,12 volt chevy alternator, using the idiot light method..charges good, completely rewired.New plugs wires, coil, carb rebuilt, tank removed and cleaned, new gas line, new fuel filter, new air filter..starts easy, runs real good, til it gets warmed up. The head has been painted,so I'm assuming it has rebuilt. Do ya think a misadjusted valve could be my problem. I really like this little tractor, but I need to be able to use it for more than hour at a time..It's done this ever since I got it,been throwin parts at it ever since..

Thanks,
Tim

Is it a pertronix coil? if not, it could not be the right one for the electronic ignition and could be heating up the ignition. If you are sure it is an ignition problem Pertronix help line is very helpful. Look at the little white sticker on the side of the ignition module. If it is discolored the unit is possibly overheating due to a wrong coil. Are you running a resister before the coil? The pertronix needs full voltage to operate.

The coil I'm running is a NAPA unit, don't have the number with me here at work,it said external resistance required, but I'm not running a resistor with the pertronix. I honestly thought it was a coil heating up,but everything I have changed on it has made no difference so far..

Thanks,
Tim

Pertronix told me to disconnect the wires on the coil and measure ohms between the terminals. It should read 1.5 ohms or more to be compatable with the pertronix. If you are heating the pertronix up you will burn it out. $30 for a pertronix coil will insure the right combination. I know, I pulled my hair with mine until I got the right coil. Call pertronix for their advice. They are good to talk to and it's free.

If you"re running a coil that says it needs EXTERNAL resistance, why are you running it without a resistor? There is a reason it says it needs a resistor; to keep it from overheating and shutting down the tractor. If Pertronix requires a full 12 volts, then get a 12volt coil that DOESN"T require external resistance.
