I looked at this tractor today as a possible restoration project, and would like a good idea of its value (in present condition). The owner inherited it and has no desire to restore or repair it, nor does he have an asking price. Just wants me to make him a fair offer. He says the tractor is a '39 model A. Has not run in a few years, sits outside uncovered, but is not stuck. Engine and radiator is holding antifreeze. Tin is fair at best, hood is poor. Muffler replaced with beer can. Seals leaking at both back wheels. Left side tires/wheels removed from tractor, both wheels are rusted beyond repair around valve stem hole. Right side tires rotten, but holding air. Two new front tires go with tractor. Amp meter smashed, lights missing, and magneto bracket broken...missing bottom bolt hole/timing adjustment slot. Steering wheel makes almost one complete turn before front wheels begin to move. Gas tank looks straight, but very rusty inside.

Thanks for all the responses an honest recommendations. I knew I could count on this discussion board for help. I really had no idea as to the value of a tractor in this condition, and certainly can't aford to make a poor investment with the tinkering budget I have.

He should be happy for you to haul it away. If you feel you must give him an offer, $100 is tops. I agree with the other poster that tractor is going to probably take at least $1,000 in parts, tires, etc. before you get to the actual restoration. Bodywork and painting alone is not insignificant.

I restored a 1942 A about 3 years ago, and it wasn't in as bad a shape as the one you describe. I agree there is is a lot of satisfaction in taking an old hulk and making it new, but it is a tremendous undertaking as well. The A and B are particularly tricky to work on because of the tendency to fall over due to the weight distribution of the engine. Be careful when removing the real wheels that the engine is securely jacked and braced and make certain you get the cast iron wheel reinstalled on the right rear

If you've never done one, I'd get this one for a parts tractor and get another one to restore.

Best of luck

Look for a post later today about my BN. I got it from a neighbor with a promise I'd restore it. The piece of mind of having it retored was payment enough. Th alternative was the scrap pile, and because of a sentimental vallue, that wasn't gonna happen.

I'd offer him $0 and a promise to let him take it for a spin when it's done.

Take Care
Steve

Scrap iron price. This sounds like a parts tractor. It would be much cheaper to purchase a running tractor, in better condition, than to rebuild this one.

just my opinion.

Hi, I would go with what Allan suggested, $100.00.
I paid $100.00 for a Farmall A with a stuck engine and it included the single bottom moldboard plow. It was in the same condition that you described on the tractor that you're looking at. Hal

KW,

Boy, I dunno. Kinda like Rusty says, you could end up dumping a trainload of money in this little guy.

I'd offer him $100 and if he doesn't take it, go find another old tractor that is still running at least.

My opinion,

Allan

Sounds like it is not much more than a parts tractor, you could very easily put $1,000 into this tractor just to make it useable, and then you could start the actual restoration. I would think $150 to $300 would be plenty to offer.
