I have run across a late M that has disc brakes, Large clutch, Liftall to clear the clutch. It has all the equipment for an early super but as near as I can tell is a straight M. Is anyone aware of any late M,s being put out with super parts. The serial # on the housing is FBK295779 X1 the # on the engine is BKM282779.
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks Richard

Hey Thanks guys for all the responses. There are a lot of M's around this part of the country but this is the first one I have run across with the factory disc brake setup. I am familiar with the Lamberts but that is not what this is and acording to your info the serial # is consistant with this being originally equipped this way.

Thanks again, Mess with these things long enough and you become convinced you really don't know as much as you think you did. Seems the older I get the less I know.

I have a 52 Straight M that is S/N FBK 296965 xIg. It has IH disc brakes. The later M had the disc brakes, large clutch. But still had old hydralics and 6 volt. 6 volt was not introduced untill the 450's. You could get a 450 with 6 or 12 volt. I have done alot of looking about the late M's because mine is the newest I have found or heard of. If anyone has any later than mine let me know. Thanks for letting me ramble.

I got one it's not that far from yours,

serial # 296474
engine# 283474, so they built the engine in 51, had a new years party, the boss told them to put disc brakes on all the rest of the M's starting in the new year, So they took the 51 engine, and put it on a M with disc brakes. Thats what i think happened.

I believe disc brakes were an option on M's starting in 1946. It is real easy to tell if you pull off the brake cover. on the M's with disc brakes.the brake shaft has probably twice the splines as the supers.the disc itself has a center collar that slides on the shaft, a lot better than the supers, the disc could not gouge into the shaft. If I remember right Osco-Lambert was the vendor for these.

DWV, where did you come up with your data? Where have you been? I have made several comments about Super M's to people on this forum and they eluded that I didn't know what I was talking about which could be true or not but the super M's seem to be a big mystery as to live hydraulics and 12 volt electrical systems because I know the ones that we had and the neighbors had were both and I hadn't seen a 6volt standard hydraulic system till recent tractor shows, I'm beginning to thing I am nuts but I think IH did a serial# break and prepared to add things preceding the Super MTA. Two cents.

All your questions are answered in the parts manuals. I don't have a Super M parts book, I do have a Super H, as to live hydraulics, there is a specific serial number break. ALL letter series tractors (except the diesels) had 6 volt systems throughout production, including the Supers, and the Super MTA. I will take the other posters word for when the hundred series went 12 volt, as I don't have one.

ih did't put 12 volt systems on gas tractors until the later 450's.

Yes changes were made from start to finish of SM
prouduction.Amp gage cover, lights, live hyd.,bat. box under seat,3 bolt starter mounting instead of
2 on gas tractors are some.linkage and brackets
were others. Can't help you on 12 volt Question.
Unless tractor is diesel, parts books show only
6 volt for SM also SMTA and on to early 450 unless
LP or diesel. My infro. comes from parts books, working on trators and looking over most i come in contact with.I will claim to know enough about some IH tractors to say nothing is 100% positive.

DWV, Okay, I concede and most of what I was saying was right and Lord knows I spent a lot of hours on the M's, SM's,SMTA,400's and 450's and was young enough to really enjoy the differences in them and one thing was the headlights were much brighter with those goofy flat headlights and I asked my brother why they were so much brighter and he said that was because they were 12 volt vs the 6volt on the M which you had to light a match to see if they were working. At that age I wouldn't have known a 12volt if it had hit me in the face but I do know that was a big old battery box under the seat and the engine turned over much faster when you started them. We had a diesel SMTA,gas SM and a 51 gas M so that explains that and on cold days that wasn't nearly enough. Thanks for the info.

Not sure about the clutch, but have heard about late M's with disk brakes. I am sure someone will chime in here with more info.

Your housing no. indicates a 1952 build date check your casting parts for letter codes for month day and year. 1952 letter code is x the x1 is a gas head. engine.
