H or a C ?

I have been looking at 2 tractors a H-$600.00 and a C $800.00. H has no hydrolics the C has the little arms that are hydrolic. C needs tires so there is another $1000 but the H has good enough tires that would do me for all I would do, plow a bit of snow, maybe some antique tractor pulls. Now for the questions 1)-what would a belly pump cost for an H and are they hard to get I would like somekind of hydrolics to work a snow blade. 2)-both tractors are in about same shape so which would be the better deal in long run? 3)-Which is easiest and cheapest to get parts for? Any input would be appericated. thanks Terry

Thanks for the replies all. I found out the H I was looking at was not a 600 dollar tractor but $2000.00. The H he had for $600.00 had a hand crank, mag, no starter or battery, no fuel bowl or gas line to the carb and one tire that was not there just a rim but he did have an extra tire he would give me to put on and it had not run for 2 years. I was welcome to try to get it going but I was not into doing all that work then buying a starter, battery and something to give it hydrolics. I bought the C today it runs good, starts great but smokes a little when first started and needs a little work. Will post a picture of it when I get the film back. Guess I will get into the fabracation business now and try to build a front blade for it.

Forget about the belly pump as everytime you push in the clutch your hyd's will stop. Go with live hyd's. The hyd pump that goes in between the distribuitor and engine is $700 or $800 and still available.

Everyone I know of unhooked the drive coupling on the belly pump and simply used them as a hyd oil tank years ago.

The C is in more demand than the H and will bring higher $$$$

Both good tractors.

If your thinking about a H I would step up to an M. Frame size is not close and HP is higher

For those prices, I would buy both. The resale of the C would be much better than that of the H. Hence, you can afford to put more in it and be able to get it back out when you sell it. I don't know about the $1000.00 for tires. Are you buying gold ones. I just bought them for my C and they were $400 for the pair. You can find used ones for less than half that.

The C also does have live hydraulics.

H belly pumps are available though to save on shipping they are usually sold without the resevoir. Does the H have the resevoir? You'll probably be able to find a pump/resevoir unit locally if you don't. I rebuilt my H lift-all last winter and was surprised to learn all the rebuild parts (minus the seals, mine were O.K.) came to only about $30. FWIW

I have several belly pumps for a H also a couple for M's. I know when they were taken off they worked I can't say now. Now the rest of the story, I live in western Oklahoma, If you are close by the shipping wouldn't be too bad. I'll sell a pump with everything to put it in for $75.00 plus shipping. Email me we will talk, or call 580-445-1204

They are both a really good tractor for the money. The H is a bit bigger and was the most popular of the letter series. However they are all easy to get parts for. But the belly pump might be a little expensive if you get new but you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting a decent used one I would think. If plowing snow is all you'll do both will be a fine job. But the tires are pretty expensive and you need to factor that in. Seems to me like you have a tough decision on your hands. I'd get whichever has a wide front end. Much safer.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy the H. For what you need it is the better choice (especially considering replacement tire costs).

Does either tractor have a 3pt hitch conversion? That would be pretty desirable. If they are both in about the same condition, I would go with the H. Not much larger in size but a heck of a lot more power. Just as good on gas, and parts are plentiful for both. I don't know if it is just me but I see a lot more used H parts than used C parts in my area (western NY). Either way you are going to get a good tractor.

I'd buy the H. The H is enough bigger to make it a better blade/loader tractor for light work. Belly pumps are (where?) available and fairly cheap. And you can learn about your tractor as you work on it. My nickel Dick Davis
