Hi Rob,

First off, what makes you think that you have a drain? I don’t understand how are you measuring 5.4 volts on a 12-volt system. Where are you putting your leads to get this reading?

This just sounds like a simple matter of tightening the darned fan belt. Bad alternator bearings don’t squeal, they growl.

when the - cable is unhooked from the batt i put the leads from - post to the ground w/ nonething on something is drawing 5-6 v. i have went through light & ign. switchs, changed voltage reg, checked ohms on resistors..... today while moving grain i noticed that when either the + or- cable is unhooked that the tractor dies. is this a good way to check to see if the alt. is working?

Is the squealing coming from the area of the alternator? If so the bearing is out. Have the alt. bench-tested just to make sure. Mabey the alternator is also causing the drain. Just start unhooking stuff until the drain quits.

the drain occurs when nonething is running. i tried unhooking all components but haven't found yet.
