Head Repair Question 450D

After pulling the head on Dads 450D, I found not 1 cracked cylinder but four. Guess the ole girl is batting 100%. I have what appears to be a good head from a UD6. It is basically the same, but a few of the inner workings are slightly different.

Now for the question. Should I get the cracked head welded. (It is cracked between the valves on all 4 cylinders). Should I get the good used head I have redone and change the necessary things to make it work. Or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new head.

To make matters worse. As I was walking by it today, I noticed that the top of the sleeves are junk. New sleeves. :( Of course I noticed this as I was making room in the operating area for my 560D. It needs the head gasket replaces and probably has needed it since the late 80's. Wouldn't have noticed it leaking if I hadn't gotten curious as to why the big grease spot on the side of the engine seemed to be getting damper.

Thanks for the help fella's.

Try Hoober's Inc. in PA. Their number is 1-800-732-0017. Here's a number for used IH parts in
AL, 1-800-248-2955. Ask them if the head has been
magna-fluxed or if it's guaranteed not to have any cracks. Good Luck, Hal

I believe the heads are interchangeable, don"t know what differences you spotted? Getting a head repaired is pricey, and buying a "new one" is a roll of the dice. New translates to another used one. New sleeves are kind of costly too, what do you mean by "the tops are junk" ? LOL Geoff NY

I would guess that antifreeze leaking into the cylinders did the damage. The sleeves are badly rusted and pitted from the top to about an inch down. Also the tops are ate away quite a bit. I would be really concerned about them if I didn't replace them.

The differences I saw were in the valves and in the linkages for the low compression valves. Also the injectors are turned to a different angle. Everything else looks pretty much the same.

Some of the last 400D tractors and all 450D used
open type injection nozzles turned at angle like you indicated.before that the nozzles were orifice
type.I see a lot of the last head they made for 450 on MD so i would say they will fit the other way to.Some of the early MD heads were different
though.
