everyone writes in to talk about there tractors but they all want to now what its worth like there only thinking what they can sell it for .WHY? I think that if your going to restore a old tractor you do it because you want to keep it after you put all the hard work into it. I restored My 1942 H and going to keep it. I am starting restoration on 1960 770 oliver next.Yes I now it"s green but she has a lot of protential and when I"M done I don"t care what its worth. Money in the pocket is only spent. A machine is worth keeping and I"ll pass it on to my 2 sons that get as much out of these tractors as I do. THATS MY 2 CENTS MR!!!!! Later in years you"ll say I Had one of those once. and I"ll still have mine. THINK ABOUT IT.

JRB: I know a couple of quite large collectors, 20 or more tractors each. One guy does a complete mechanical and body restoration. Most of his tractors, diesels anyway could be put to work in a commercial farm enterprise. These tractors as far as being cost effective would compete.

The second guy does little more than sanding, painting and very obvious mechanical work needed. He drives his tractors to a local show, and most times you will see him with half of them on a tow line coming home. Guys like this second example are quite numerous, thus they make it impossible for anyone to recover their investment. It is a shame in a way, but sometimes those bad bearings, seals, gears. valves, rings, etc. just haven't shown their true colors.

Just take a Farmall 656 diesel for example. In my opinion one of these in new condition would compete anywhere with any new 60 hp tractor, being built today. If one could be assured of complete restoration, it would be worth $15,000. to $20,000. for farming with. Problem is it has to comptete with 8,000 hours of wear and fancy paint jobs as well.

It's just a question like any other -- those asking usually don't have a clue as to what their (or someone else's, if they are buying) tractor is worth. Some people do think they can make money on them, they will quickly find out otherwise, unless it is a Super MTA or some other "desireable" one. I'm going to sell mine at a loss the day before I go into the nursing home (any day now). When I buy them, like you, I am not looking to make a profit.
