Old Plow

I finally found the plow I want except the dealer wants $700 more for it than I gave for a brand new one 30 years ago.

What gives with that deal? :>(

The whole she-bang is 3-point mounted, of course and is built in two pieces: The hitch has a large diameter barrel that the main plow backbone rides on.

If you will notice in the picture, there is a hydraulic cylinder laying crosswise on top of the hitch frame right behind and above the lower hitch points. This cylinder is tied to both the hitch and the main plow frame.

When the cylinder is actuated, the whole mess rotates laterally 180 degrees on this large barrel and it always rotates in a direction whereby that gauge wheel will swing down underneath the plow as it rotates.

This swinging motion of the spin allows gravity to unlock a somewhat large "rocking" lock at the gauge wheel and will then let the gauge wheel drop down onto it"s opposite catch as the plow is coming up into the opposite pull direction.

The sequence is: lift the 3-point at the end of the field, do a tight braking figure-8 turn out onto the unplowed ground while at the same time spinning the plow over for the next run. The whole complete spin of the plow probably doesn"t take 3 to 5 seconds.

When the wife and I get this hobby venture of ours all put together, I want ya to swing by out this way if it is at all possible (don't know where ya live) and give this type plow a try.

Yep, it's hard for me to even think about that day so many years ago, but that is exactly how I lost the first one.

I think mine brought a screamin' $500 if I remember right.

It is a Massey. 4 18 inch bottoms.

It takes about a 100 horse tractor to pull one of these things nicely; they are one heck of a plow and the thing I like about the Masseys is that they do pull so easy as compared to some of the other brands.

Got lots of hurdles to jump before I can even start to think about buying the plow (the wife and I are still workin' on the darned dirt deal).
