I have a H that I was using hydraulic oil for the pump. A friend told me that I should use SAE 30 motor oil. I"m getting ready to drain it and would like to know what i should put back in

As noted below, if you are using a pull-behind implement with another tractor, use hytran, or better use the same hyd oil as is in the other tractor, if it is not IH. Your system is not picky about the oil it uses. A disadvantage with Hytran is that it is thinner, and will tend to leak more if the seals are worn. If it is your only tractor, I would just stick with SAE 30 non-detergent.

That is the old way but I would use Hy-tran. Modern hydraulic oils were not available when the lift-all pump was designed but are a much better substitute now.

Hy-Tran is not thick enough, after the oil gets good and warm it has a tendacy to bypass if you are trying to lift anything with much wieght to it at all. I learned that the hard way and went back to 30wt, like the lift-all manual suggests.

I have had this question for a while. If you use an implement on two tractors, one with 30W and one with Hy-Tran, won't the fluids become contaminated?

Yeah, that's another reason to use Hy-Trans. Make sure if you use 30W that it is non-detergent. I've heard that the detergent oil foams in the hydraulic system. I started with 30W non-det. in my '47 H but switched to Hy-Trans, which worked great and am now using just Hydraulic oil which is a little thinner. I think I'll settle on the Hy-Trans which can be gotten inexpensively from Wal-Mart. I've used the Hy-Trans on a single 3.5" x 8" cylinder to lift a 12' x 15" oak log and I didn't experience any problem - FWIW.

30w non detergent motor oil for summer use,10w nondetergent for winter use.
