Can I use my Super C for brush clearing?

Hey,
I have a 1954 Super C that I inherited from my father-in-law and am pretty new at tractor use and repair. I have it running now and would like to use it for clearing some pastures and undergrowth. My neighbors have brand new huge tractors with 8' bush hogs that will cut through anything and while I don't expect to do that I would like to do some clearing. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I understand there are 3 pt conversion kits available, but aren't there also trail behind (2 pt or fast hitch) type mowers available that would hook right to the drawbar? What about belly mowers? Which one would work better and also what size would work best with a Super C? (What's the horsepower, by the way?) I appreciate any advice.

I have a SC that I put a 3 point on,and I use it to mow my yard with a new 72in Bush hog finish mower, and it does fine, but I mow about 2 times a week so it is not hard on my tractor at all,if I were going to bush hog a field,if a SC was all I had to use I would go with a 5 foot bush hog and raise it up and go over the whole feild first, then go over it again and let it down,it all depends on how high the grass is,but what I am saying is,work your way down, don't try to do it all at once,it would be to much for the tractor.

PTO hp is 24.4--for what you are talking about 5 ft is plenty wide, wider and you will have to take a partial cut. If you really mean brush, not just weeds, be sure the mower has a shear pin in it or some other means to protect your pto. Also, the C/Super C does not have a live pto, and even 1st gear will be too fast sometime. In very heavy growth you will have no choice but to use 1st gear and take a partial cut. If you are talking about fairly heavy brush, Super C's were simply not made to take that kind of abuse.

I have a 51 H with just a drawbar, and I bought a 5 ft KingKutter Pull type rotary kutter. The set up works real well....cuts like a charm and doesn't work the tractor much at all for light brush work.

I think because of the size of your tractor, you might be able to get away with the 5', but they make a 4' too. You don't want a finish mower for what you want to use it for.....a rotary cutter is the best bet. Simple hook up too....I can have it unhooked from my tractor in about 15 seconds.

Just my opinions for what its worth.
PS I paid $685 for my 5' pull type heavy duty model at Tractor Supply.

Hi ya Brian,

Have you got a picture of your cutter?

I have the 7' HD model and I swear I could pull it with the old H (mine is a '51 too).

Thanks,

Allan

If you've got a Fast-Hitch, the 3-pt conversion is handy, and looks like this.

I've used a 60" 3-pt finish mower behind my Super C, and it handles it fine. I think a 5' brush hog would be OK as long as the weeds weren't too tall or thick. When I was looking for my SC, I saw a few with 60" (or is it 59") Woods belly mowers.

Good luck,
Bill

Where can I find this conversion at? I have been looking for a simple 3pt conversion for my 200 and this looks like what I had in mind.

The YTMag parts place has the 3-point conversion prongs. Didn't see the top link bracket, though. Click on the "Tractor Parts" link under Marketplace on the upper left-hand of your screen; choose Farmall and then Super C. After the page loads completely there is a category for hitch parts.
If I find a source for the bracket, I'll post it...if you want to make one I could send you detailed pics of mine.
Good luck,
Bill

Wow, guess I should have searched a little harder. I have been through the Marketplace stuff and never seen that before. Thanks for finding that. If you could send me some detailed pics I would be interested in making the top bracket. Thanks again for your help
Josh

I've seen the prongs advertised somewhere...the top link bracket almost looks like a custom fabrication job on mine.

If I can find a supplier I'll post it in the next day or so. Mine was on the tractor when I bought it.

I believe the SC has 26 hp... I rigged up a home made 3pt setup on my first SC. Worked pretty good. It ran a Ford 4' 3pt brush hog with no problem. Only time it was hard going was when I let the weeds get ahead of me and they were rubbing off the bottom of the oil pan..... . needless to say I mowed twice. I've got a 5' woods mower behind my current SC, it's a drag behind (hooks to the drawbar). Haven't used it much but it handles well..
