If the Super C was offered with fast hitch, why not the SH and SM series? Was it only available on the larger models starting with 300 and 400?

Because that's the way IH did it. They had to start somewhere. They probably wanted to "test the water" first. The 300 and 400 are derivatives of the SH and SM. However fast hitch apparantly had a long lead time, as the C rear housing was drilled for it and can accept fast hitch. The housings for the H and M were not, although the housing on the SMTA was. So it was phased in on the Super C, and was probably planned for the SMTA and the SHTA (which was never produced), it showed up on the 300 and 400, which replaced the SMTA and SH.

One other thing, the one point fast hitch for the 100 will fit the Super A, it is listed in my Super A parts book, don't know when it became available for the Cub. Anyway IH considered fast hitch for several years before actually selling it.

Thanks. I always thought it strange that it didnīt come on SH and SM and the SMTA. We had a SC with and a SC without it. Can a 400 hitch be installed on an SMTA?

If you didn't notice, IH liked to move slow in introducing new technology in those days. They produced essentially the same tractor from 1939 through 1958, adding on one or two new features with every "new" series. I've always said that the Farmall 450 is the ultimate "bolt stuff on an old M" tractor.

Maybe IH wanted to stretch out the innovations to keep farmers buying new tractors every couple of years. Maybe they thought if they introduced it all at once, farmers would reject the tractors because they were such a dramatic change from what they were used to. IH had the technology years before it was released... The "06" series could've been released in 1959 according to one history book I have, but IH decided to go with a "transition" series, i.e. the 460/560, presumably to get farmers used to the idea of a 6-cylinder engine before dropping the whole modern operator platform on them???

450-560 fast hitch is a bolt on to SMTA.

400 fast hitch requires 400 tranny lid or home made attachment point for the rock shaft.

Found a photo of a SMTA with fast hitch. Looks like a 300 hitch (no draft control).
