IH 300 Couple of Questions

Hello,

Not being very mechanical, when I asked a guy about some issues with the 300 I am looking at buying, he told me the TA is broken, but not needed, and the directional control valve leaks, and he ordered the o ring for that.

I know what the TA does, and I know a lot of them don"t work on old tractors, but is that a big deal? Also, what is the valve he is talking about, and is that serious?

Thanks for your advice.

Jeff

I have a 300 and the TA feature is pretty cool to use- it gives you 8 forward speeds and two in reverse. They are about $500 or so to replace. Sometimes the TA clutch is just out of adjustment with the main clutch- and then the unit will not work. You can still use the tractor with a disabled TA.

The o-ring is an easy fix.

The TA may or may not be a big deal. Best case, it's just out of adjustment (unlikely if it's been "broken" for a long period of time); worst case, the drive train stops working altogether when least convenient, and you end up with a major repair bill (replacement requires splitting the tractor, plus a new TA - maybe $500 alone).

The "directional valve" probably is a hydraulic control valve - if it's just an O-ring it's not a big deal - but you ought to find out and/or get him to fix the problem.

Repairing these tractors isn't cheap, figure it into what you're willing to pay. Good luck.

 Depends on what you're using it for. in reply to Jeff w/ an h, 09-28-2004 19:47:05
The T/A comes in extremly handy for making hay. I can only repeat that I've read it's also a good thing for plowing. The more I use my 300U the more I like it. It's going to be staying for quite a while I think. Loren

Jeff;

Without the TA the 300 will be about like an H. The TA makes the tractor.If you have to split tractor to repair TA you may also want to replace clutch etc. Can add up to big bucks.
