Ok, I need some help from you Farmall guys! I have a 1949 H that the frt wheels go crazy while driving down the road. Is there a quick fix to this problem? Or do I have to tear apart the steering and work on the worm gear?? Thanks! Doug

I had this problem on my 1941 W4 The steering is different but the manual recommended this. The worm gear rides in another round gear. This other gear can be taken off and rotated so you are using less commonly used teeth. I also found the gear was loose and torqued it down. This reduced my steering wheel slack from 5/8 turn to less than 1/4 and significantly reduced the wobbling on pavement.

M's do it too, everybody is right on. the thing is it seems to be a problem with the worm gear to ring gear lash and it becomes more involved but we always tryed to tighten the worm gear shaft nut which seemed to help for awhile but eventually came back. I don't know if the gear hardness was correct or what it seemed to clearup with the SMTA because our Super M had the same malady but our SMTA didn't. SuperM didn't do it with the 4 row cultivators mounted on it too much weight probably the reason I had arms like a prize fighter during cultivating time.

my H is the same way ive tryed it all to fix its just worn out i checked with local IH dealer and the wormshaft and half gear are still advalble but a little pricy at around 350 for both but my advise is if your going to keep this tractor for many years you beater buy these parts while you still can they wont have them forever

Could be the worm gear. Just let air out of one tire, thats what someone told me to do. Wobbly steering on an M got a couple people mad at me last weekend, and my friend got his tractor taken away for 2 months, Why?? All because of wobbly steering, Long storry.

U shouldn't blame anyone else for the things that u do... The person who u b^tched at is not as b^tchy as u think. She can really be nice.

Check knuckel mid way between steering wheel and radiator first. You may need a new key or just drill it and put a bolt thruough it. If knuckle is ok take off flat plate on top of cast piece. Wiggle steering and see if it is the worm gear or the half moon gear. if its the half moon gear try to tighten down on nut and see if it gets better. That with repacking with grease has always worked for me.

Do not know for sure what you mean by wobbly. That could be bad tires. If it is loose, then take off the front hood, follow your steering shaft down to the front bolster, you will find a big plug. take that out, and you can tighten the steering in there if it is loose.
