Hey Guys,

Help me out here. My dad bought a brand spankin' new 400D back in the early fifties or thereabouts. I swear it had factory power steering on it or else, perhaps my old memory is leaving me high and dry again.

Was this an option back then or something?

Thanks,

Allan

As below, power steering was an option on the 400, and had a little metal disk bolted in the center of the steering wheel. The powere steering was not the same as the 450 though. It had a pump mounted on the engine driven from the crank pulley. I believe it was still a Blehlen (sp) unit.

My Dad's 400, a gas and probably a '55, did not have power steering. It did have a much bigger steering wheel than his Super H. Steering with the 2MH picker was not fun.

You guys really make me feel like the Great Carmac (Johnny Carson show)taxing my brain now I'll be up all night trying visualize every 400 I've seen to recall about the power steering. Number "1" I've driven several 400's and they all had power steering. Number "2" judging by the fact they were built to carry the 4row front mount cultivator and mounted corn picker I would say it was SE and also their big competitor JD had it as SE and last but not least my book doesn't say power steering as standard but it doesn't say it was offered as an option either. Thanks guys for another sleepless night.

Hi Don,

Well, what grabbed me was the post by Kelly C who is having problems with his add-on PS. Just didn't jive with the way I remembered our old 400.

But, his is a gasser too. 'Spose this has any bearing on the issue?

Sorry for keeping you up. :>)

You know what guys? come to think of it I don't remember driving a 400 gasser I think everyone got scared off by talking to the ones who had them and their penchant for guzzling down $.20 a gal gasoline and scaring them off. When they would talk to dad we could plow all day with the SMTAD on one tank of fuel easily while the SM and worked on M could pass it we couldn't pass a gas tank. I think I do remember driving a fairly new 450 gas with power steering Demo Gold w/4x14 fast hitch plow, what a sweet ride?! Beyond that I've seemed to lost my memory and don't remember where I left it.Boy! It sure would be nice to find that Demo Gold 450 wouldn't it?

Yes, it was a factory option...I believe the 400 came out in 55, as only year for the Super MTA was 54...would have had a little "disc" on center hub of steering wheel which said Power Steering...Cmore
