overhauling H

I have run up a stump on overhauling my H. I would like to use the stepped pistons (firecrator?) with 3 7/16 over bore. I cannot find that combination of kit, due to the valves being 5 5/16. My question would be powerwise which would be better the stepped pistons or the overbore? It looks like I will have to sacrifice something. Any help is most appreciated.
Thank you, Bill

I have rebuilt several H's. Email me and I will help you find out what parts you will need for your rebuild.

Why don't you buy the pistons and sleeves seperate from the valves if you want to keep the same head ?

When I measured the domes on the fire crater pistons, they were only about 21ccs, about the same volume as the head gasket. The 3 7/16 overbore also gives about 23ccs. If you want to get more power, find a high compression head (#8043). The change in volume is over 50ccs.

Better yet, go with the 3 7/16" domed pistons and a later model gas head- the calculated compression ratio goes from 4.3:1 to 6.5:1. Also, have the cam reground to 0.240" lift. It made noticeable difference on my H.

Hi Bill, You must be talking about a complete motor kit I take it.That would come with valves? I have been running M&W high domes in my H for the last 30 years with one ring job And a crank that was turned 40 thousands when they put the pistons in her I have worked the dog sh#$# out of her and never have had a problem. That may be on smaller motors never heard that on an H or M I know that you want to keep your Rpms down becuase thats what they were made for.I sell motor parts let me know if you need anything . I have a 1941 w4 (same engine) I was advised by several sources not to do either. The crater fire pistons raise the Hp to about 35 but the extra stress on the crank can lead to bigger problems, especially if the crank is already "tired".
