Seems like a fairly obvious question but is the drain plug on the Farmall M ('51) the lowest point in the cooling system within the crankcase? What is the best way to descale and/or de-rust the water jacket and entire cooling system? I am fortunate enough to have the M in running condition but am suspicious that the internal passageways may be severly constricted or plugged.

Hi Keven , I forgot your origanel question . Do you have access to a pressure washer? Take the water jacket cover off the motor and give the inside a good cleaning with the pressure washer. I did this with mine and cleaned out al ot but of coarse I had the motor out too. JON

I would think something like lime away might work if you soaked the block in it but it would probly loosen up enough to plug the radiator if you added it to the cooling system. Just A Thought JON

Well Kevin, I'm currently in the middle of the same project on a B. I flushed all I could and still had a problem, so I pulled the head off and flushed the cooling passages with a pressure washer. Got about 3 double handfulls of scale & rust out of it. Had the radiator flushed and the head gone over while it was off.
Got the head back from the machine shop yesterday and hope to reassemble the engine this weekend.

It's a lot of work, but if it works it will be well worth it.

I thought about trying to do it by filling the cooling system with something like Lime-Away or something like that, but I was afraid of unintended damage to something else inside the engine.
