They were not that rare, I had a 400D from about 1971 until 1982. It was a real work horse. My Dad would have been 90 in Nov. if he were still alive, I have heard him talk about Granddad being the head of the 8 mile road district when he was a boy and they tried out an IH crawler to pull the grader. He said he sat on the hood and held on to the exhaust pipe. The old 400 you could remove the muflier with a pair of leather gloves on. The exhaust ran real cool on them

all of the MD's, superMD's MTaD's 400D's 450D's started on gas and then switched over to diesel. it wasn't utill the 460/560 that they used the glow plugs to start them on diesel.
does anyonw know witch position the lever on the left side that switches it from gas to diesel needs to be in to start them on gas? a friend of mine has one setting in a barn that he wants to get running again and possibly sell. What is this tractor worth if it runs? it is in fair to good condition with a fast hitch.

Farmallkid1958,
The lever position depends on what you have. The MD, SMD and SMTAD; gas was forward and diesel was back. On the 400 and 450 gas was back and diesel was forward. If you want to know an estimate on value please email me. Was it a 400 or 450?

its a farmall 400 w/ a fast hitch. its in average condition. tires are fair, and the paint is old but not rusted. don't know if it runs, i will assume that it will. it did when it was parked several years ago.

Jimmy,

Remember how we threw the levers at the same time? Left hand threw the compression lever forward and the right hand pulled the throttle over to kick 'er in the butt a bit?

Have a good one,

Well, Allan I do beleive you are right. At 62 and 10 months, I will forget some ones name I have known all my life, I might remember in a couple of days or may not.
You have a good one too.
Jim

Ok it is kinda clear now....The person that told me about it was either mis-informed or was mis-taken about the tractor.

It could be that the specific brand and model combination with diesel is rare--International W400D (I've never seen one). The diesel engine itself though is essentially the same between the MD, WD9, F-400D, IW-400D, F-450D and IW-450D.
