I recently bought what I think is a Farmall A. The seller told me it was a 1944 model. It is definitely a Farmall. How do I tell which model it is? I have a pile of parts including cultivators and a plow.
I want to use the cultivators or at least the plow to prepare an area for gardening in the spring but I have no idea how to put these impliments together or attach them to the tractor.
Can you point me in the direction of some pictures of installed impliments so that I might get more use out of this great machine (I have used it mostly for hauling logs out of my woods with great sucess)

Hi Al, If your tractor is an A, I have photo of
the tractor that I restored with the plow attached. I didn't hide my email address if you want a picture. It shows the brackets that are attached to the tractor. Hal

Hi Al, If that tractor is a Farmall A installing that plow isn't that hard. It has been along time
since I owned that tractor, but I think you have to remove the drawbar and the attachment points are on the tractor. It use a lever with heavy springs for raising and lowering the plow. As big as the plow was it wasn't that difficult to raise the plow. It did a nice job plowing. Never had culivators with mine so I can not help you with that. Good Luck, Hal

Al, there is a number of ways to tell what kind of tractor you have, as the other gentleman said look for the serial number plate loacated under the seat. As well look in the Tractor photo galley under Farmall, look in the for sale by photo's under Farmall. If you have a Case?IH dealer near you go in an ask them, (take photo's along ). Once you know what you have you Case/IH dealer still stocks manuels for A's an B's as well as C's an many othe models. Binder Books in Tigart Or also has many manuel's for equipment an tractors as well, I believe there reprints are some of the best I've seen. If all the above dosen't work post a picture here on YT an someone will tell you in short order :o) Welcome to the wonderfull world of Red :o)

Howdy Red, well alot has happened in the past year after the wife passed away. I'm no longer working for England at the moment but intend on going back working for them in the near future. I sold all the tractors I had except for the 43 H which is sitting in Ohio, I gentleman from lower Mich bought the F20 an has upgraded the restoration on it so I was told. I then bought a bunch more last summer to include some SM's MD an a H, all not running of course, LOL. BTW I do have local runs withing a 1000 miles of the house so get to work on the tractors at least once every few weeks in a friends shop, hard to take having to work on tractors in a shop an not under a tarp LOL :o)

If it"s an A, the serial number tag will be located below the seat. The serial# will start with FAA for an A, or FAB for a B. The A is "offset", with the engine on the left, and the seat on the right. Whatever it is, please be very careful hauling logs with the tractor. If the front of the log catches, the tractor can flip instantly, crushing you beneath it. These tractors were not designed to skid logs.

Wow, Thanks Stan, I know that tractors can be dangerous but I never even thought for a moment that flipping could occur by skidding a log (a new term in my vocab). I suppose they make attachments to lift a log to prevent this.
I think it is an A because the seat and steering are offset to the right which is something I read here somewhere earlier. I will look for the serial number under the seat to confirm.

Hi Al. I think your nearest Case-IH dealer is Columbia Tractor, which is about 60 miles to your north. Drop me an e-mail if you get stuck (figuratively) and maybe I can drop by after work. (I work at IBM, live in Ulster county.) I don"t have experience with the A per se, but grew up on a farm with a Farmall 350.

It is an A and I successfully (mostly) installed t in reply to Evan350, 10-05-2004 08:08:26
I found out with the help of you folks and the manual :) which I found among some catalogs in a box that the seller gave me that my tractor is the Farmall A.

The plow I was trying to install is a McCormick Deering A192 or A-91 (A notation by previous owner indicates A-91)

I got it all on, however, I could not get the rolling Coulter attached to the beam because the bolt holes did not match up?

I used the plow briefly to dig some earth in a plot that I want to garden. I'm still clearing a few logs and lots of vines which the plow easily moved. Now I have to learn how to use the plow correctly.

I seem to have several Rock Shaft assemblies which I suppose will come in handy eventually.

Is this too long a post?

I have more questions about cotter pins and different colored parts that appear to be part of this plow system.

Thanks for your help and input thus far.

Al Fitch
