Tractor Insurance (Road)?

I've got a Farmall Super A that I'm wanting to make road legal. I've got no problem registering the tractor but I'm wondering about insurance. I don't have either a house or farm policy that it would be covered under and I'm only insured as a second driver on some one else's car. I was wondering what the cheapest way of insuring it is likely to be and are there any companies that deal specifically with this sort of thing? I'm only wanting to drive it short distances (i.e. - less than 1/4 of an hour) and it's difficult trying to trailer it everywhere seeing as I have neither a truck or a trailer. Also I'm in a city so I reckon there is actually a possibility of getting stopped some time. Also, I'm in Canada. Any suggestions would be appreciated, SAm in NS

As an independent insurance agent in Iowa I personally have a collectible vehicle insurance policy that I have my restored Super H listed. The policy offers bodily injury and property damage liability as well as comprehensive and collsion coverage with a $0 deductible. The policy is $50.00/ 12 months with $3,500 agreed value on the Super H. Medical payments, uninsured & underinsured motorist coverage is not available on tractors.

OK! you got me. What is registering a tractor? Do you mean like an automobile? Is that required in Canada?

Road legal. Here you just stick a slow moving vehicle sign on the rear of the tractor and/or wagon.

Here is mid Missouri in the above response.

Got to thinking. While in the military I was stationed in Germany for several years. The Germans and several neighboring countries had license plates on tractors.

If you can register a tractor as a vehicle in Canada someone must sell insurance.

I don't know about where u live but where i live, we don't have to register or get a licence plate for our tractors. We also can drive them when ever, not only for farm use like rustyfarmall had mentioned. Please post ur doing so we know. Thanks

farmallman: Sam is living in Nova Scotia and yes tractors there are registered. It is a no expiry registration that is done when you buy the tractor. I know you are from Ontario, and I find it awfully hard to believe that MTO doesn't need to know who owns all these tractors in the province. If a tractor becomes involved in an accident with heavy liability, no one would claim ownership. There is only one way to verify who owns a particular tractor, and that is registry.

The question here is not about insurance or registration but rather financial responsibility. If tractors are going on the road someone is financially responsible for any accidents in which they may get involved.

You guys may think it is a lark to jump on the old tractor and go for a ride around town. Wait until someday some hot shot with a BMW or Mercedes runs into your tractor. His insurance is going to be paying top lawyers. Who will be paying your lawyer? Worse still what happens if some guy with a 6 figure income gets killed?

It matters not whether you live in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Iowa, North Dakota, etc. You will be liable for damages should your tractor be involved in an accident. Because that insurance company will hire top lawyers you may end up with blame you don't deserve. I know a guy who lost his farm just this way and driver of the car involved was drunk. He may have been drunk, but he had insurance.

I live in ontario, I drive my m into town cause i dont feel like biking to tim hortons, and cause its fun, you would be supprised at how many people stop what there doing and wave and smile at you. Just be careful, once a person in a car that is not from a farming back ground sees a tractor, they go from good drivers, to idiots in a hurry.

I agree with farmallkid, just put a slow moving sign and BE CAREFULL. City slickers turn stupid in a split second. Also, how old are u. Legally, u have to be 16 + to drive a tractor on the road and u don"t need a drivers licence. Glance behind u every so often and if there are cars coming from both sides, slow down and pull over to the side but don't go into the ditch :( Lastly, have fun. People enjoying seeing the old tractors and if u stop, be prepared to brag about ur tractor. :)

Well, I'm 18 and have a full drivers license so that's not a problem. I don't really have to worry about the ditch (unfortunately) but I do have to mind the curb. I do a lot of cycling, anywhere from 1000 - 2000km per year so I'm well aware of what idiots drivers can become. One of my biggest problems is that I'm bounded by a couple of roads that are four lanes wide with a center turning lane (50/60kph limits) that depending on where I go I either have to cross or drive down. I'm not intending to do this at rush hour though, 5AM sounds good to me. Thanks, SAm in NS

farmallman: Since when did MTO start giving legal advice. I heard a judge ask a young man where he got his legal advice. Young lad responded," From a policeman." Judge said, "That was your first mistake." I think a few of you young lads should cough up a few coins and consult a lawyer. You may find it is money well spent.

Sam:

I've never heard of "tractor insurance" before in Canada; I drive my H into town every so often from the farm, and just use a slow moving sign and exercise caution. I've seen a lot of policemen as i'm driving and they always wave & smile. I wouldn't worry too much unless the city you live in is the size of Toronto or something..that would be a sight wouldn't it... doing a tractor tour to the CN Tower...lol/

I guess I don't know about Canada, but down here a farm tractor is legal on the road only if it is being used for purposes of agriculture, as in going from one field to another, the house to the field, or transporting commodities to market. There are a lot of folks that do drive a tractor on the road for the pure fun of it, and I am not going to be the one to tell you it can't be done. Just be careful.
