Noises... What is normal and what isn't?

Posted this in tractor talk but thought it more appropriate to post here...

I know this is difficult to answer without hearing it but... How much rear end / trans noise is considered normal for a tractor? I have an International 404 that does whine somewhat the faster you go. It seems normal to my ears though. No clicking or grinding sounds. Should there be no whining at all?

Also, what about the hydraulic pump? It squeals a bit when raising the 3 pt? Is that normal or should I be concerned? I have heard a lot of hydro pumps squeal, I believe it to be normal but looking for some feedback.

Thanks

I've been on/around tractors of all colors for forty years, "haven't heard one yet that didn't whine a little." Glenn F.

I have never heard a 404, but I wouldn't think a little bit of noise is any major concern. An extremely loud whine can be from worn out bearings, but it would also cause a vibration. My dad always tells me that tractors that had the transmissions rebuilt usually had a whine to them when they were returned. They worked fine, but were a little louder than what they were originally. As for the hydraulic pump, our 806 makes a kind of whine/squeal when it lifts up. I don't think that is normal, and could be because a valve isn't opening or closing all the way or because the pump has low pressure. However, even if it does make a little noise,if it lifts okay,I would leave it alone.

Im gussing whining would be a better sound than a grinding or scraping sound.
