Farmall M diesel - buy or not?

Hi,

I know nothing about Farmall tractors and I am hoping that one of you knowledgeable folks can help me. A neighbor has 3 tractors that are sitting outside his machine shed (and one inside the shed). He is in his 80's and bought all of them new. I was talking to him and said that it is a shame that his equipment is just sitting and rotting in the weather. Well, he is willing to part with one, I think it is a "M", but am not certain. It is a diesel, has 2 fuel tanks. One for starting fuel - gas or kero? The other is the main tank for diesel. It has a narrow front and about worn out tires. The paint is nearly all gone and there is a fine red (rust) patina, but the metal is still solid and nearly all straight. The exhaust manifold is cracked (1/4" wide!) and had been repaired at some point. The 4 speed transmission shifts into all gears. There was no battery and the fuel tanks were bone dry, so it couldn't be started, but the gentleman swears it always has been a good runner. I am guessing that the vinatage is in the 50's, but it is just a guess.

So, what is a reasonable offer for a non-working tractor like this? Is the diesel exhaust manifold still available at a reasonable cost? If I buy, blast&paint, fix the issues what would it be worth?

Thanks!

I would suggest that you not buy a M diesel as your 1st.
M is for sure a great tractor make no mistake about that but get a gasser 1st to cut your teeth.

I don"t have an IH deisel yet, but from what I,ve read about them, they are not for the "faint of heart". You should really already have the knowledge and resources necessary "in house" before you tackle one. i am an ASE Master and they do facinate the heck out of me...maybe someday... my thoughts anyway...

$50.00 to $100.00. Tires, battery and exhaust manifold will cost some where around $750.00. And you don't know what else the tractor will require to put it in runing shape. In mid Missouri base price for a running gas M is around $1000.00.

If you don't know anything about tractors, I suggest that you not purchase this one. You better, best bet is to purchase one in running condition.

I ran across an md a couple of years ago. It had been sitting for about 5 years. It wasn't stuck. I had to rebuild the injector pump ($550) and put new plugs in it and i had it running. I gave $300 for the tractor. If you have to go into the engine be prepared to spend alot of dollars.

Exhaust manifold is probably not available anymore. Lots of the gas-start diesel parts are difficult to find, but not impossible. This is not a easy project. Some parts you have to make, fix, or afo-engineer
