Although I grew up in an IH dealership, I'm relatively new to the old tractor hobby and I'd appreciate some information. I have a Farmall 300 that needs a new flywheel ring gear. Can anyone tell me where I can buy the stands for safely holding the two halves of the tractor when splitting it?

Thanks,

Steve in Indiana

Steve,
I have designed a tractor splitting stand that is quite simple and it works very good on Farmall tractors and it will even fit other tractors that have side frame rails. Send me an E-mail and I get you some more information, charlieu@smig.net

the best system, albeit not the cheapest, is an overhead gantry system with one or two trolleys on the cross beam. The tractor splits almost effortlessly with each half on a trolley from above. You can split in two or more places very easily. Mine cost me $1000 and some labor erecting it. The gantry covers 12X12 floor space. I can pick and place on either trolley anywhere in the 12X12 space.

Steve: If you have good smooth concrete floor, get yourself a pallet jack, some good hardwood pallets, a good assortment of blocking and ratchet tie down straps. You can single handed split and put back together even the big 6 cylinder diesels. The finesse you get with the pallet jack is unbelievable. I have had the entire front end of a 560 from clutch housing foreward on a pallet.

I built split stands for my SMTA mostly from parts of an old front mount cultivator. I used the arms that carry come back from the front mount(fancy cultivator terms here) for the "A" frame to hold the front up. I used some of the threaded adjusting rods on the bottom for adjustment. If you have a tricycle type tractor it is tougher to keep it upright. On the back I built a stand with wheel similar to the one in the IT or Blue Ribbon Manuel. I used one of the cultivator wheels but it wasn't heavy enough to hold the rear properly with the TA attached to rear. I had to split the tractor again later and took it to a friend's shop. Used the A frame on the front and a 3 ton floor jack chained under the rear and that worked even better but you need cement floor. On other tractors I have split I have used a front end loader, block the back real well and remove the front with the loader. As I say a tricycle is hard to keep from laying down so you need to hook chains properly.

Dad and Grand-dad ran a Farmall garage for years, and they built some "stands" from two pair of side rails from a junked H or M...put mega-heavy floor jack under clutch housing, attach chain hoist on overhead I-beam to engine half, roll the engine half away, and attach the two pair of converted side rails, one to the engine half, one to the rear half.

I live about eight miles south of Wabash, or four miles north of Lafontaine, in southern Wabash County. Where are you?

Try a RED POWER MAGAZINE issue, there are ads for them there. I just jack mine up and build a "cradle" and use an engine hoist, but there are sipler ways. As to the gear, sincve you have to heat it to remove it, consider turning it around. I have done this on a couple of tractors with good results. Have fun Geoff

Hi Steve, You can probably buy those stands from your local automotive store or from Tractor Supply. The stands I have are rated at 5 tons
and they're adjustable in height.

You are going to need a hoist so you
can split and support the tractor and be able to safely separate the two halves. You're handling
a lot of weight so be careful, Hal
