I need some advice as I am new to hauling tractors. I have a H that is restored and a SM in the restoration process and would like attend a few tractor shows. Any suggestion on what type of trailer and size that you all use. Also any do's and don'ts on loading unloading much appreciated. Thanks...

I usually haul two tractors when I go to a show.Like you I tried to figure out what kind of trailer to buy.Well a tag-a-long(bumper hitch) type came my way, cheap,so ibought it.Had it lengthened to what I thought was long enough but it wasn't.My advice is to figure out what your needs are and then add about 4 foot, this will not include the dove tail or ramps.I can still get both tractors(a Super C and a off breed Pony)on my trailer but they are real close, too close. My advice on ramps is,be sure they are attached to the trailer.I borrowed a trailer that had loose ramps, got too close to the side of the left ramp and it flipped, both tractor and ramp.Luckly I escaped with my life but still spent 11 weeks off from work recouperating, broke ribs and a arm that got smashed. Most trailers have ramps that are secured to the frame if you buy the deck over wheels.Go gooseneck if you can afford it,if not go gooseneck anyway.

For what it is worth, I suggest you shop around and find a older truck/tractor. Equip it with a winch, get a oilfield style 45 or 48 ft semi trailer. Able to haul 4 wide front tractors or 8 tricycle. We use a gooseneck only when we are moving 4 or less tractors and pull it with a frightliner single axle cabover with a 6V-92 and 13 speed. For hauling tractors to shows or pulls we use a 73 chevy C-65 tandum pulling a 48 ft semitrailer and hauling usually 6 or 7 tractors. Get a bigger trailer now as you will get more tractors in the future.. Tim

OK, I am also new to hauling tractors, but have towed trailers, RV"s, etc. for years. I just ordered and are waiting on my new trailer to be made. I ended up getting a 20+4 deck over tag along with adjustable dove tail and dual 7,000 lb. axles. This was thought about and talked about with many people and dealers over several months. I believe a gooseneck would be the optimal setup for me, but I had other factors to consider. My final decision was made based upon the fact that with the adjustable dove that I could get the tractor loaded on the trailer then raise the dovetail up and adjust the tractor front to rear to increase or decrease my tongue weight. I also have a backhoe that I do not have a trailer for. The tag along I can also use behind the dumptruck whereas with a gooseneck I would be stuck having to use one truck to transport then the dumptruck for obvious uses. With the tagalong I can have both pieces of work equipment at the same place at the same time in one trip.

I don't mean to be discouraging but I think you will find that the 20+4 is going to prove to be too short. If you still can, you need to add at least 5 feet to your trailer.

Just curious why you think it is too short for my needs?

As CNKS said, the H is easier than the M. You can get by with a 1/2 ton and a tag-a-long trailer with the H. You really will need an equalizer hitch(and of course electric trailer brakes) to be safe. For the M, you need a 3/4 ton or heavier truck. You'll need an engine oil cooler and a transmission cooler if you are going any distance. Most newer 3/4 tons come with that. If you use a tagalong, you will need to turn the rear tractor wheels in. Best to go with a Gooseneck with deck over the wheels. With an HD 3/4 ton or 1 ton dually and the gooseneck, you can haul both the H and the M. As you can see, the tractors are only the start of this hobby!

Goose necks are always better. Otherwise if you use a car trailer, one with two 3500 lb axles is safe for your H. The SM needs a heavier duty trailer, as it's weight plus the trailer weight comes close to maxing out a 7000 lb trailer. The H will fit between the fenders with the wheels dished out, the M won't. Many people consider it to be safer to back the tractor on. The problem with that is, for car trailers, the rear of the tractor is heavier than the front, leaving you little room to get the load properly balanced. I suppose a load equalizing hitch would solve that, but I rent trailers, and have never seen one. Do NOT try to get by without trailer brakes.
