When timing a W4 or H, can I use a timming light?

If so, what timming mark should I use?

I would think a light would be a better way to do it instead of the way the manual states.

Thanks Bob

If your H came originally with a mag and has been switched to a distributer, the timing light is useless because the marks are not correct.

With the engine operating at less than 1900 RPM, setting the timing at top dead center with the engine not running is going to give the most reliable results. The double notch is the one to use for TDC. With the engine at operating speed, verify that the advance is workingwith the timing light; it should show the spark happening at the single mark(or very near it).
Remember, this is not a racing engine and was designed to operate on less than 87 octane fuel from the 1940"s!! Too much timing advance will create hard starting problems and extra heat for the cooling system to get rid of. Do not try hand cranking if you have set the timing to occur BEFORE TDC!

Also I forgot to ask, is it ok to advance the timming a deg or two? I always run 89 oct or better.

Thanks Bob
