I've been looking for the F-20 with an original wide front end but seems impossible to find in the mid-west. Are the wide front's rare or are they located in another region of the country. If I was ever to find one, what would be the price increase? Thanks.

The late F20's used the same wide front end as the early H and M. I do not know if the upper pedistal was diffrent from the one used with the narrow front. I found a F20N a few years ago with the early straight non ajustable wide front its a 1937. At this point I have it up on 4 good tires and an engine for it on my engine stand, but with other irons in the fire it's still on my to do list. I found it in the finger lakes area of NY.

The only two things the same between the late F-20 wide fronts and the early H and M wide fronts are the axle casting and the tie rod out front. Everything else is different including the main casting that bolts to the pedestal, the wheel spindles, the axle ends (the two parts that slide in and out for tread width), and the rest of the connecting linkage for the steering.

Thanks for the information Mike. Any certain casting numbers on the front end that would tell me it"s for an F-series or letter series?

The axle casting that is common between the two series is 5671DA. The casting that connects the axle to the front bolster is called the "Front Axle Adapter" and is casting 5673DA. That is for the F-20 only. The F-20 front axle extentions are 5672DA (common left and right), and the F-20 axle stubs (or knuckles) are 40107D for the left and 40106D for the left side. Anything different, especially the axle adapter, would be for the H or M.

Mike you are a very knowledgeable person I really appreciate the information. Do you happen to know about how many wide fronts IH made for the F-series? Does the serial number on the tractor indicate if it came with a wide front?

IH may have had some idea on the number of wide front tractors they produced (in fact I am sure they had an exact number), but as yet those records have not been found. Suffice it to say, the wide front F-20s are very hard to find. They seem to be very regional in where they were found. The one I have came from Maine (potato country), and there are some small number found in California where raised bed plantings sere the norm. THe reast are very widely scattered. They did distinguish whether they had a factory wide front on the by the addition of a "W" suffix after the serial number. For instance, if the tractor was just a wide front end the serial number would have read FA123456W. If it was a narrow tread, wide front end it would have read FA123456NW.

Great information Mike. Do you have pictures of your wide front F-20 that you could send to me? It's time for you to brag up that F-20. Thanks.

The wide front that I have is currently not on a tractor. I was only able to find just the wide front end in Maine. The tractor that it was mounted on was a very low serial number F-20. It was not correct for the tractor, as this front end is only appropriate for a tractor above FA127277. So I only bought the bolster and the wide front with no wheels. There was no sense in paying freight for an incorrect frame. I have since mounted a correct set of steel wheels on the axle, as I want to have one on full steel. I have a really nice set of 47" skeleton rear steel with road rings to put on the future tractor. I just prefer steel wheels on anything I have. I will dig up a picture just to show the wide front end.

I know the wide front was a special order item with these tractors from the factory. Does the serial number on the tractor then indicate the tractor came from the factory with a wide front? Do you see many of these older F-series tractors with wide fronts in the NY area? I didn"t know the later F-series shared the same front end as the H. Very interesting.
