This year my Farmall H ran good pumpin water for settin tobacco. It also ran real good haulin hay. But this last time i had it out i decided to haule one more load of hay before i put her up for the winter. Well she started and was only hittin on three. I ran her anyway. She ran good until the wagon was loaded down pretty good. Well she started to pop and crack and backfiring. I cut her off and got down and took the distributer cap off to find that the points fell out into my hand. Well i got that fixed. New spark plugs, new rotary button, new points, ect. But she is still runnin on just three cylinders. The Cylinder not firing is No.4. I can take the spark plug out and its wet, i dry it and put it in cylinder No. 3 and the plug fires good. But No. 4 just won"t fire. I think it is a stuck valve. Tell me what you think and if you have any tips on finding out weather or not it is a stuck valve. Also as you go from cylinder No.4 through all of them they get stronger. Any help would be good. Thanks J.C

JCC, if a valve is stuck open (never heard of one sticking closed unless it also bent a pushrod or broke a rocker arm) you should be able to tell by just turning it with the crank. Should get compression 2 times per revolution..

You may want to take the valve cover off make sure a push rod didnt get loosened up and un hooked or out of adjustment. Has happened to me before. JON

Do a compression check - a valve won't be stuck closed.

Nope. But i am thinkin my problem is this tractor was bought i think in 1945(which makes it an older model). Its been overhauled twice. But when it was first bought it was the only tractor in the valley. So for the first 4 to 5 years or more their wasn't a day gone by it wasn't runnin(unless rain). But the whole distributer was never rebuilt. So i am assuming it needs rebuilt so then it will have accurate timing. This tractor is about 64 years old and the distributer has never been rebuilt. This tractor is 49 years older than me here. Yes it needs plug wires and a new Distributer cap. So i am lookin at about a $200 or more job. I do plan on restoring it. But right now i am restoring my Papaws Case 190 Lawn and Garden Tractor.
