Hi Guys,

I'm still at it. What is the capacity of the hydraulic reservoir on a straight old H? Anybody got a manual?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan, Of the opitions I have heard voiced here today I tend to favor The rearend oil conversion as my preference, Keeps every thing neat and clean, The Hy-tran/Transdrolic oil has got to lube better in the dead of winter than 85/140wt. I just hate those aux tanks for they get in the way, and they don't look as neat , or make for a slicker looking instalation, just MO.
Was just looking at my ol M, You can put a street T in at the rearend drain point, and run the inlet hose to the pump. amd if yor H doesn't have a belt drive unit then plumb the return in the deck plate that is there when the belt unit is removed. all the hoses stay on the RH side of the tractor, makes for a clean instalation. Just a thought!!
OBTW.....since your H is all dressed up in her new clothes. It would seem to me that your loader after this new pump project needs a new coat of paint too. Just messing with you, It is getting tooooo clost to first snow to have her down for an insignificant thing like paint on a loader>
But it would be toooo good, in IH red also.
Later, John A.

Hi ya ol' Bud,

Ya darned right. I thought it is one heck of an idea too; how many 560s, 656s, etc., have ya seen with water in them also.

I think the feller is on to something; sure makes sense to me.

Yeah, I've been putting off paintin' that old loader; got to get it done one of these days. :>)

Later

6 quarts.

There is a way to use the belly pump housing as a reservoir and not have to have an external tank.

I have seen it on this site. If this is of interest to you, search the archives. Also, someone has pictures on a website that show how to do it. Again, search the archives and you will find it.

Ouch!

A gallon and a half 'taint a gonna work for this loader, I'm afraid. I'll just have to rig this tank of mine someplace external to the tractor.

Thanks for the help!!

Allan

Have you tried to use the belly pump res for a supply have seen lots of loaders that used them and they worked on both M@H.If the cycls are two way once they are filled the level in the res will remain the same.

Hi Gene,

Well Duh! 'Course they will.

I swear, sometimes I think with my bootheel instead of my head.

Thanks for straightening me out; you guys protect me from myself! :>)

The only time you need a lot of oil reserve is with a single acting system, right?

Allan

Yes as two-way are always filled with the same amount whether retracted or extended.

The rod side of the cylinder holds less oil because the rod takes up space. When you raise the loader it would still take more oil than when you lower the loader right? A few years ago a neighbor bought an M with an add on live hydraulic pump and someone had built a custom oil tank that fit in the belley pump cavity. Not sure how much oil it held but you didn't notice it unless you took a close look.

Mornin' Scott,

Sounds right; probably the reason for the reservoir tank in the first place, to make up for that differential in fluid amounts.

What do you think of TP's idea of just using the rear end of the tractor? Heck, I think this young man is on to something with this proposal.

'Spose I'd have to fix all 'er leaks first though, right?

Allan

Using the rear end sounds like a good idea. You would have to have good seals and you would have to flush everything out good. Flushing it out would be the hardest job, all that old gear lube gunk ect.

When we repaired the M&W 9spd on my buddies "M" me we flushed it out with Kerosene..... Ofcourse we had the lid off the works, but it cleaned it out 100%. Wasn't too hard of a job, just alot of "Unbolting"

I have been reading these posts of yours Allan and I got a brain fart..... ..... .Maybe you could fill your rear end with Hy-Tran and plumb hoses, and coupled with a filter, maybe you could use the rear end as your reservoir? Maybe enlarge/tap a hole already in the case and run the oil through a filter, then to the pump/valve/loader, and dump it back into the tranny for the cycle to start over.

We ran Hy-Tran in our "M" and that would be how I'd do it if we would have put a Live Pump on it. Only question though, would those old pumps suck the oil up, plus filter it?

TP from PA,

While that sounds like a really slick idea, have you ever seen how much water comes out of one of these rearends in just one year of use and sitting in a barn? I don't think I would want to subject an expensive component such as a hyd pump to water or other contanimants like this. A filter might help with the particles but not the water.

Yes, I do realize that since we had a 560(Grin)..... ..... .Actually, it never sit out after the engine was rebuilt and we never had a problem afterwards with the Hy-Tran "Milking"..... ....All the tractors after the 4/560's used the rear, I don't see why it wouldn't work on an H if you kept it inside out of the rain. Seems to me most of the water gets in through the stick on the old IH's.

460/560 and others use essentially the H/M rear end for the reservoir, and yes mine was at least a third full of water.

Allan - my loader uses one of the side arms as the tank. Holds around 8 gallons if I recall correctly. Works pretty slick.
