Hey guys. Failed a pre-calc exam on Thursday so I decided to dedicate the afternoon (if that's what you call working outside with a treble light and a yard light until midnight) tearing apart my most recently purchased Super M. Broke a sweat in the 40 degree heat trying to get that pan off. Anyway, took the oil pan off, flushed the radiator, inspected carb, waited for all old oils and bad gas and water to stop dripping and I got under the tractor. Everything looked okay, sleeves look okay at first glance, but I found an obvious crack in my number three cylinder. I bout wanted to cry. I knew I had to remove the head regardless, but now it's a little more serious. Can I replace the sleeve without needing to replace the other three? Does anyone know where I can get sleeves n such? What kind of equipment do I need to pull a sleeve? I am not afraid of tackling the project, actually looking forward to it, but it will be my first in depth cylinder work. Thanks for your help.

HI TIM, I also have a SM you will enjoy it. You can replace the sleeve your self pretty easy. The problem is if its cracked it likely to have a cracked block also.Depending on the size of the bore you can buy a set of sleeves or maybe even only one I think I would do them all with new rings my self.I took an old GM round steel thing that holds the spare tire in to the compact cars of the 80s or maybe 90s too I dont know.It has a nut welded in the center I ground it to the size of the sleeve and put a piece of threaded rod in it up through the bore and made a piece of steel about 5 " long and two " wide for it to go through prop it up on the block with some kind of shims I used sockets and the threaded rod goes through the center put a nut on and tighten her down and draw that begger out of there. If you tell me what size bore you have I will see about sleeves for you. Hey Jon. I loved my first Super M so much it was the reason I bought this one :)!!! Anyway, I will check on the bore size, but what would four sleeves and rings cost? I didn't measure the bore, assume right now a standard 4" for the 264 engine, I will double check to see if they have 281 sleeves or not. The main thing is that it comes down to cost, but my number one priority is doing it right, too, so I usually go by the motto "The best money allows." The right thing: replacing them all. If you could get me a price on a set, I will see what I can budget. I would not have a problem going through you, either. Thanks a lot. Tim Malin

Tim, this is your neighbor,Dick C. You can click on engine kits on the left side of this page to check out their price. I have a catalog that I buy through sometimes. I also may have a sleeve puller I would let you borrow. Give me a call between 6 or 7 the next 2 nights. I have Legion meetings both nights and don't get home till 6 from DPC. -2766
