I removed the front cover to check timing on my '50 M, now I have oil pushing up from the space between the cover and the block, right in front of the governer. Have I pulled a port that oils the gears inside? Do i have a crack in the casting? I hope I dont have to remove the cover and replace the gasket.

I would agree with other post that maybe ya got a gasket overlap or some sort of "bugger" betwwe gasket and front cover or gasket and front plate. Solutions, could possibly take front cover loose, get putty knife in to smooth surface and squeee a bunch of silicone in the area to seal. Might hold until next time ya gotta take it off anyway. I wouldn't think there would be that much pressure in that area.

Did you put in a new gasket, or is it possible that you disturbed the seal on the gasket between the plate and the block? If you did not replace the gasket(s), that is probably your problem, not a cracked cover. My guess is that the oil being slung up by the gears is being pushed through between the cover and the plate in front of the block or the block and the plate between the cover and the block.
