Disadvantages, hmm, maybe I’ll think of one later. Advantages; faster cranking speed, usually quicker starts, can use a battery out of a car or pickup in an emergency, brighter lights, get a 12 Volt negative ground for any accessory equipment like radios, CD players, VCRs, TV’s, Video Games (OK I might be getting a bit carried away :>) ) When I convert mine, I keep the 6-volt coil and use the resistor to drop the voltage. I also use either a starter switch (for a pull rod) or solenoid that has a 12V tap on it that I use to by-pass the resistor to feed the coil full voltage while the starter is running. Really whomps up the spark out of the 6-volt coil giving me a nice hot spark at the plugs while cranking. The time is so short that the electrical parts don’t seem to be affected. On my M I also changed the starter drive to a heavy clutch type instead of the flat coil spring after I broke a couple of springs. Disadvantages, hmm, only one I can think of is that your tractor is no longer an authentic original.
