I'm trying to get into the timing cover to replace the gear that drives the hydraulic pump on a Super C. I've separated the front end from the engine. I can't see anything holding the crank pulley on. Is it a press fit and slides off with a puller? I'll probably have more questions as I get deeper into it. Will an I&T manual be enough for this job? Any other things to watch for? My email is open, thanks for any help. Gene

I would replace the crank gear too as long as you're in there. It will be worn. I just replaced both on a C-113 rebuild and man did it restore the proper backlash. Expensive but worth it. Also, changing that cam gear will be much easier using an arbor press with the shaft out of the tractor.

The cam gear meshes with the gear on the pump to turn the hy pump. It also will have to be removed with a puller. Why are you changing the cam gear? Better get a manual so you can get the cam and drive for the dist and the gear on the crank all in time so you can get your engine started when you are done.

The portion of the cam gear that drives the pump gear is stripped. There is a small strip on the front side of the cam gear that does not mesh with the pump gear that is still driving the camshaft. I'm getting a manual but wanted to get it open to see how many parts I have to replace.

It's a pretty snug fit, you'll need some heat and a good puller

So it is a press fit? I have a standard 3-prong gear puller..What about putting a good strain on it and heating the area behind the pulley with a rosebud? Or should I heat it and let it cool before using the puller? Thanks again. Gene

It is press fit on there tighter then tight! I had to use a bearing splitter and pulley puller on it. It took the better part of 2 days for me. I think one thing that helped was soaking the shaft/pulley in a good dose of penetrating oil before I went to bed the one night. The next day I gave her a lot of heat and a lot of muscle. I broke 2-3/8" drives, and 3-sockets I was reefing so hard. My suggesting is to use high quality sockets and drives, preferably 1/2" and a good 3 ft cheater bar on the end of it. Make sure the tools are guaranteed for life and just take them back when you break them. Good luck!

P.S. it went back on a lot easier then it came off

Don't pull directly on the pulley or it will break. Use a bearing splitter behind it to pull on.
