I started to paint my Farmall Regular wheels red using ppg paint code 70019, red #50 and it seems too light and bright and christmasy. Is this the right color? Or do I need something different? My paper work says this is the right color for pre-1949 farmall's but I have no idea if it's right. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know what was used on Farmall Regular wheels, but the letter series until mid-1949 or so used IH 50 (PPG 70019, DuPont 7410). 2150 (PPG 71310, DuPont 96766) did not appear until 1958 or so. The intermediate 1949-58 1102B is no longer available, so 2150 is considered the correct match for 1949-up. All I have used so far is 71310, but I have not painted anything older than 1950, and don't remember what IH 50 looked like.

someone told me PPG 71310 was the IH red, but that may be for post 1940 stuff. the paint place near me sells DuPont, so their cross-reference was U-tech 96766. that's what i'm using on my F-14 and it looks good. i have no idea what the correct code should be, but anyone who sees it knows it's a Farmall, so it must be red enough.
:-)

i'd say if you have ten restored Farmalls in a row, you'll probably see at least nine shades of red.

I think the original red might have been a little darker but no one knows for sure. the old guys are all dead. Go ahead and use what you have, at least it will be pretty.

I'm not dead yet, but have an affliction known as CRS.

Thank God there is still common sense in Tractor restoration! You know I do this for the fun of it and to please myself and a few old timers that get a little misty remembering the way these old girls pounded their roids to distraction. It never fails to irk me when some one nitpicks my baby to pieces. Do what you and your pocket book can and enjoy yourself. Watch the big stuff Don't paint a McCormick purple. If it is pretty to you God Bless. I've never gotten a call from the Smithsonian but have made a bunch of people (including myself) very happy. Now I'll step back off my soap box.
