Recently acquired a 1256 turbo w/4935 orig. hours. It has a serial #14421 sy-AA. Can anyone tell me the year? Does this number tell anything else about the tractor? A couple other things...What should idle rpm's be this one is about 1,000. Wide open is about 2450-2500rpm. Is that too fast for wide open? Also the clutch takes "two men and a horse to push in" and seems to either be engaged or disengaged. There's no smooth engagement. Lastly (For now) where can I get the plastic IH logo that goes on the very front of the tractor?

Thanks in advance!! Butch

Hey Butch. We have a 1456, newly aquired as well, and although I don't remember what ours low idles at, I know the 1256 factory was 2400RPM's, and the 14 factory was 2600 RPMS, and ours does just a hair over that. Your 12 will be fine where it is. Our clutch is a mother to push in, too. Pushes back so hard on your foot you either get a charlie horse or end up jerking you into the seat, right? I heard that is normal for the large clutches on that tractor. Good luck, has been a great machine with us, hopefully you will have good luck with yours as well.

Thanks Tim,
Got to thinking and figured that the book my Dad has for his 856 my have similar adjustment instructions. Although it (the book)is 3 hours north of me a verbal walk through is only a phone call away! Hope you enjoy your 14 as much as I do our 12. Some day I'll get pics here!!

Butch

It's a '69 model, a very late one. The S means it has a TA, the Y means a 12 gallon per minute hitch pump, as do 99% of them. Could not find the AA. The clutch is the heavy-duty 14" with 15 springs, and is a pain if you do not have the hydraulic assist option. The reason it feels like it is engaged or disengaged is because your TA dump valve is out of adjustment, causing the hydraulic clutch pack in the TA to re-engage after the main clutch. Get yourself an I&T manual and go through the entire clutch, TA, transmission brake, and shift linkage adjustment, and it will be a totally different tractor. The best place for the IH logo will be a junkyard, although most of them are broken. Check to see if you can get it from Case-IH, and let me know if you can. 856, 1456, and 1026 use the same logo.

Butch. We use the heck out of our 1256, excellent tractor. The clutch could be the dump valve on the ta. It wouldn't have anything to do with the hard push, but would if it is jerky when you release it. The book will tell you how to adjust it I think, but sometimes there is enough play in the linkage you need to go past book specs, your local dealer should be able to tell you how to adjust it correctly.

we run a 1256 as our main power fro our farm, they cam out with a hydraulic clutch so it isn't so hard to shift, we still have the old arm strong one on ours, makes for a strong foot ;D

Butch you will have to get a book to check the RPM for sure but low idel should be about 640 and high idel no load is just over 2600 about 2640, rated load is about 2450, but check the book.
