Dick: Spent many sessions turning one of those by hand as a kid. My grand mother had one, and we used to hit her up to make ice cream on hot days. She always said," No problem if you guys turn the crank." And man could those machines make good ice cream.

that must be some hellaciously stiff ice cream to need 30HP to churn it!!!!!

seriously, i was going to set up a hit-n-miss churn, but i already have a few old tractors and i think this may be the way to go. sure it's way more HP than needed, but i think it'd be a cool setup for family picnics. heck, you could even have several churns running at once with different flavors in each.

I wonder..... Does it lug the H down and stall it or just twist the beater shaft off when the ice cream is done?

Nope that H just lugs along and the belt starts to slip pretty seriously (actually the man tensioner gets tired). You guys and your hit and miss rigs would have to come up with transport-- see this ice cream maker goes in the parade with all the other Farmalls. Actually the inventor almost had a newbie to collecting convinced that it was a factory option for New England. Great fun.

I have seen several very similar set-ups. Also have seen the freezers being powered by a hit and miss engine, and have also seen them being powered from a sprocket mounted to the rear wheel of an old truck which was jacked up off the ground.

Is that thing running off the PTO? Is that a big speed reduction gear near the tractor?

Has anyone figured out how to include a picture using a Macintosh? It has a one-button mouse, and it doesn't seem to work the same.

John yes it is PTO driven through a reduction pulley/ tensioner that turns at correct speed with H idle way down. Dick Davis
