I want to pull the top cover on my M. It grinds and will not go into fifth. I figured I'd have a look see. I though the cover would come off easy but I was looking and I see it's more involved than I first though. It looks like the gas tank has to come off, the belt pully drive, battery, steering colum, etc, etc. Are there any tricks I need to know about? Will I be able to just lift the cover straight up with a lift or do I have to look out for something in there? Is there a gasket on the top cover?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It doesn't sound all that bad, but you know how it goes. Nothing's easy. We'll see. Thanks again

Try heating any rusted bolts with a torch red hot.

It may come off very easily, I have removed one on a C and one on a Super H, no problems. The one on my 460U took more like a week, had to break the four bolts that held the seat on (on the 460U these also hold the trans cover), and attempted to drill them out. Was getting the holes off center, so I did not drill them all the way out, so the cover had to slide past the shanks on the broken bolts. Had the whole rear of the tractor, wheels and all hanging by an engine hoist for 4 days or so. Finally came loose. I would not expect an M cover to give that kind of trouble.

Richard, Lot's of the time prep for platform removal is the easy part. I have found that generally the bolts in the platform especially the rear ones are rusted to the platform casting.and very easy to twist off. I fill the depressions with a good penetrating oil a couple of days before I try them , you have to build a little putty dam on the back ones. I use an impact on them ,one burst loosen one burst tighten untill they they loosen enough for the penetrating oil to get under the heads of the bolts. Hope they come out for you, it is a real job to drill them the thickness of the platform Super M's with the battery under the seat are the worst, That's my 2 cents worth

Richard you can block the back of the tank and swing the steering post off to one side. Other wise you just about said it straight up.

I just went through the same thing on my m . Mine does have a gasket.I might add to watch out for the shifter forks as you lift it off and especially when you put it back on

That pretty much covers it.Make sure that you get the two bolts off of the brake covers, one on each side, that bolt into the top.Oh and,be careful.
