So much vaporized coolant...

Hello-

As some of you may remember, I restored most of my BN back in the summer. I haven't had a chance to use it much, but I noticed there's always coolant coming from the overflow tube...the fan then vaporizes this into a cloud of Prestone. I don't under why, after about 2 hours of running time, it's still overflowing. If I stand next to the front (on the carb side) I can see the overflow tube clearly emitting drips of Prestone, which in turn are blown by the fan, creating the illusion of billowing steam.

At first I thought I a hose was leaking, but it's clearly coming from the overflow tube.

When it's cool, and I look into the top of the radiator, I can't see any fluid.

Thanks.

TM

It's steam in reply to ffolkes, 10-26-2004 15:52:30
Steam. Lots and lots of it. For the first time, I turned it off when it was steaming a little - and as soon as the fan stopped, the overflow tube started pouring out steam. Clouds of it.

When the engine was running, I threw my jacket over the top of the radiator (just in case) and took the cap off - no bubbles, no pressure, just steam.

The engine has just as much power as it ever had though - so I don"t think the head is cracked.

I'm not real familiar with a BN, but if I remember correctly it is a thermosyphon system (no water pump). they will push excess coolant out until they reach the correct level. Usually about 1 1/2 inch below the filler neck. Trying to keep them fuller just results in antifreeze being pushed out.

If the overflow tube is in the neck of the radiator as most are, check the cap. Same problem with mine until I replaced the cap. Poor spring

There are no springs on the rad cap overflow tube is the long one in the tank and as other post said you must have a cracked head or something. Look at the coolant with cap off and see if there are any big bubbles. Is the solderjoint where the tube comes out of the bottom of the tank good and no leaks there.

Check in the rad when it's running. Look for bubbles, it could be leaking compression by the head gasket or a cracked head or sleeve.
