You start in the center of the head and tighten
in both directions. You keep increasing the torque every 10 or 15 ft-lbs until until you reach the recommended torque. Always go back to the center of the head and tighten the same bolts in the same sequence. I retorqued the head bolts
after running the engine for awhile, while the engine was warm. Never had any leakage or head gaskets blown. The head bolts used on most cars now do not require retorqueing. Some head bolts are suppose to be used one time and then replaced.
Some of these guys may have a sketch from a shop manual that shows the tightening sequence for a Farmall M. Good Luck, Hal

As others said start in the center and work out towards both ends equally.

Then re-torque after a few hours, don't foget to reset the valves when you re-torque!

When I had adjustable tappets I would check the
clearance once a year. Most engines use hydraulic
lifters now and some of them aren't adjustable.
I had them on a 66 Mustang, 68 Mercury and the 2.5L GM engine used in their cars. The cams in
the Farmalls must have been pretty good I never found one with a lobe worn off. The 54 Ford and the 58 Chevy were known for lobes wearing off. The 54 Ford's went during the first 12000 miles.
Too bad cars didn't have sleeves. Hal

On any head, I start in the middle and tighten in a spiral pattern towards the ends. I do this in increments of 10 ft-lbs until I reach the desired torque.
