HELP! Reassembling H rear end from W4 gear case..p

I am assembling an H transmission/rear end from parts of a W-4 trans/rear end. On the W4, the pedals sit on a pivot about 6 inches in front of where the H pedals mount up. there is just a thin plug where the H pedals would go, but the access is there. BUT it seems the hole is too big to screw in the pivot pins. What do I do? Do I need another H trans case? I think the casting numbers are the same.....I need assistance...AC

What year's the H? the 39 and 40 rear ends were considerably different. The later Hs were changed to use W-4 parts in many cases.

Well, It's a '48 O-4 rear end, (I said W4 just to save the confusion, because people are more familar with W- stuff) Now that I learned that the brake pivot shaft runs through the case, it will have to come out of a 39 or EARLY 40 H I have out back. What were the differences on the rear ends from 39 to, say, 51? The O-4 had disk brakes (it had all the features of a "super") but I am going to go with the banded brakes because they are lighter. (It is going to be a pulling tractor) (I know, curse me!) Now, what are the differences other than the gear ratio of the ring and pinion, input shaft length, and axle/housings from an H to an 0-4/ w-4...thanks, andy

Some of the O-4s had disks in 1948- DIsk brakes were actually on the later Letter Series tractors at the tail end, not really a super thing at all. I'd be fixen that O-4- did it ahve a wierd hitch at the back?

Depends on what you call wierd. It came back (towards the rear)awful far. I can snap a pic or get some casting #"s...What did you have in mind....AC

39 & 40 H transmissions had gears that were thinner, and the trans cases had tighter clearances between the countershaft gears & bull gears and the bottom of the cases. You will find that the 39 & 40 Hs are more likely to have had the trans case cracked due to this.

Haven"t worked on the 4"s, but on 6"s and M"s every thing is a direct swap. Little things like the brake lock are different and the mounting holes for the seat, but in general you should be able to unbolt from one and bolt onto the other. Remembe the gear ratios are different, you could wind up with a fast H. have fun, Geoff

The 1941 I-4 I have sitting in my shop has the pedals mounted exactly the same as the 1946 H sitting next to it. The clutch and brake pedals mount to a common shaft which runs all the through the tractor. There is a threaded hole on both sides of the tractor, which is about 6 inches or so in front of the shaft the pedals are on, but that is for mounting attachments.
