Voltage regulator on an H

Beenj tring to figure out what bhow to get my charging system working. I used the web site diognostic analysis. Came up that the voltage regulator was bad. Put another one on and same result. My question is can I repair a voltage regulator? If How would I do so? If not, where could I find a good used one. I don't want to spend $40 buck on a new one. Then I might as well put a altenator on the tractor.

Are you using 6v with a pos ground as the reg you should be using has to be that way. If you ground the field term on the gen it should show charge. You need to be more clear on what way you have the system hooked up.

I'm using a 6 volt with positive ground and the tractor has a magneto. I have grounded the field to the gen. terminals and the amp meter shows a charge. I think that means I need a new voltage regulator?? ( I took another voltage regular (condition unknown) and tried the same process and got the same results. Soe does this mean both of the voltage regulator are shot? If I have to buy a $40 regulator I might as well switch the tractor to an altenator. But I don't think I can make if fit under the hood of the H Farmall. I do not want to cut the hood.

Dave - Your generator is testing good. So assuming the wiring is correct the problem is either bad regulator, or you've got a bad ground at the regulator. Punch below for a flow chart that may help ID the problem.

Beyond very carefully cleaning the contact points there's not much you can do to "fix" a faulty regulator without specialized tools and instruments. Best simply to replace it!

Regarding location, the regulator does not have to be mounted on the generator. It can can go anywhere on the tractor so long as it is properly wired and grounded, and is protected from excessive heat. (The early Super H has it's regulator mounted on a bracket under the gas tank; later SH's have it on the steering post in front of the ammeter box.)

Make sure your regulator is grounded. Scrape away any paint, rust and debris from the mounting area.

If the regulator is mounted on rubber grommets, or a rubber strip, there will be a ground strap or jumper around the rubber parts, from the regulator to the mounting bolt. Make sure that's opresent and undamaged.
