Bob, I need a little assistance in converting my H from a 6 volt to 12 volt system. I have read everything I could find on this site and have received some very helpful emails from little john and Richard Fazio on the conversion as well. I am probably doing a little more then is required but I want to keep it clean and simple. I am wanting to install a 12 voil coil as well to stay away from the necessary ballast resistor and it's mounting problems if at all possible. I found out today at the local parts store 12 volt coils come in several different flavors. I would like some direction as to what the coil type should be and a make, brand, part number or some identifying characteristics to obtain the correct one or type. I am planning to use the Hitachi #14231 alternator due to the limited room under the H hood. I am using your wiring diagram by replacing the Delco 10SI with the Hitachi alternator. Your comments will be greatly appreciated along with my sincere thanks.

Farmallhal: I felt the same way as you do on this question of coils. I went to CaseIH and they were able to supply a 12 volt coil and it stated right on it, no external resistor required. All you need do is eliminate the resistor from Bob's diagram. I had this same discussion with Bob.

I also had some problems getting the light that Bob recomends. Just didn't have the exact light, and tractor would not always stop when ignition was turned off. I replaced the light with a push button type switch. Now when I want the alternator to excite I just hit the button. The reason for the push button type, so you don't leave it on when tractor is not running. Left on it will drain the battery.

Thanks Hugh for the post. This is my first post and after reading this forum for the past few months I've realized what a wealth of information is out there. Is the existing H 6 volt condenser ok to leave or is a change required there since all the distributor wiring now becomes 12 volt? I have obtained a 300 mA LED in place of the light I am going to put in the circuit to see how that works. If it doesn't I have found the bulb Bob mentioned but not the proper holder as of yet. The electrical portion of this will be my biggest challenge. Thanks for the post.
