On 10-17-04 I posted here about my 856 diesel injection pump and how the engine behaved after having been run out of fuel , then refueled and restarted . I had asked for any suggestions from you guys and received a few . Thanks. I had the pump rebuilt and the repair technician said that the rubber (actually some type of plastic facing) on the governor ring had failed. Particles of which plugged the fuel return line. I told him of the circumstances and behavior of the tractor after what ,at that time, was believed to be the engine beginning to die from lack of fuel (empty tank).I asked if running out of fuel caused it . He said not. He said that what my hired man had thought was the tank running dry, was the pump failing at that moment. In questioning my hired man more indepth about it, I have come to the conclusion that although the fuel was getting low it did not run out of fuel. Hired man said that the engine fluttered and then reved up, so he shut it off and refueled assuming it had run out of fuel. Repair technician said fluttering ,slow engine acceleration when throttle is advanced and then contnuing to rev up beyond what throttle setting should allow, and engine shutting off when throttle was brought back to idle, was consistant with a governor ring failure and plugging of the fuel return line. Red Green Man , you were right. Thanks. Weldon

Thanks Weldon, I'm no mechanic, just an old dirt farmer, but I've had that very thing happen to 2 or 3 tractors over the years. That is the great thing about boards like this, we constantly learn something new, at least I do.
