How do you all figure this is such a good deal? There seem to be an awful lot of people in this world with more money than sense.

Jeb: It's a good deal because he can probably sell it for $2,500. tomorrow. Old small tractors still have value, because lots of people still have use for them. You start getting over 35hp and if the tractor doesn't have Live PTO and hydraulics plus draft controled 3 point hitch, it has little commercial value, especially if it is a gasser. Just a mantel piece.

You paid $1500, then that's what it's worth, but to answer you question, the price is a little on the low side. I'm not going to define "little".

Scott: If you don't already have a manual, get one right away. Check lubrication on fan and distributor drive. These two items tend to get neglected on these little tractors. If you don't have the manual, e mail me, I will send back directions on those two items.

I would change all oils and antifreeze. 10W-30 or 15W-40 for crankcase, (personally I like 15W-40) Hy tran for the hydraulics and 90W or heavier gear oil for transmission, final drives and steering box. Antifreeze to suit your climate.

Items Super A tractors seem to have wrong at 50 years of age: carburator needs kit, governor may need thrust bearing and or spring, check out electrical (wiring harness can cause as much grief as rest of it.), brakes. Better still you tell us what you think is not functioning properly.

Hugh,
Regarding the often neglected items on the Super A, I'm aware of the fan issue. What about the distributor drive? I'm afraid mine's been neglected for the 4 years I've had it.
Thanks,
David

David: At least you did prove me right, on items neglected. On side of distributor drive there are two small plugs designed for removal by use of a blade screwdriver. They are also threaded for a grease zerk. The reason zerks aren't there is the chance of getting too much grease. IH recomended doing this every 500 hours or 6 months.

I never install the grease zerks. Years ago a IH serviceman advised me to use white automotive grease. I buy it in squeeze tubes and apply through the hole with tube. I do it every spring.
